Islamabad Reopens U-Turns After a Decade

Share

In a major shift for urban mobility in the capital, U-Turns in Islamabad have been widely reinstated after more than a decade of closure. The reopening of over 95% of previously sealed intersections marks a turning point for the city’s traffic flow and commuter convenience. These U-turns had been closed since 2011, forcing residents into long, indirect routes that increased travel time, fuel consumption, and road congestion.

Under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner Irfan Nawaz Memon, the Islamabad administration coordinated with multiple departments to restore access to these critical junctions. Authorities have emphasized that this is not a temporary solution but a long-term improvement to the city’s road network.

Residents across Islamabad have welcomed the move, noting noticeable reductions in commute times and smoother driving conditions. Sectors previously plagued by detours now enjoy more direct access, improving day-to-day mobility for thousands.

Despite public support, the reopening of U-turns has reignited debate over traffic safety in Islamabad. Senior traffic officials warned that the restored routes will require more personnel, especially where signal infrastructure is missing. The Islamabad Traffic Police is reportedly working on plans to bolster enforcement and possibly reinstall traffic lights at key intersections.

The original closures, which began over security and flow concerns, are now being attributed to manpower shortages rather than strategic planning. Critics argue that blocking crossings created pedestrian hazards, especially for schoolchildren, and encouraged unsafe driving habits.

A CDA spokesperson pointed out that zebra crossings were removed during the signal-free initiative, compromising safety. Now, with U-turns back in place, Islamabad faces the challenge of balancing urban efficiency with road safety.

As the capital continues to evolve, the reopening of U-turns reflects a renewed focus on public convenience, pedestrian safety, and smarter traffic management.

Our bureaucracy is in fact autocracy and is the single cause of our hardships. This is yet another example where one person (secretary/commissioner) hijacks the whole system – lat sahab took a decision without considering input from traffic department.
Another example is the case of protected U Turns on Srinagar highway. These have been cause of serious accidents but this nation was unable to revert the decision of another lat sahab.
How many lives we need to sacrifice to make these sense less bureaucrats listen?

It’s a good decision.vl help in controlling wrong way drivers specially bikers need strict checking by traffic police. At the same time I would like to point out the the long U turns on newly constructed Park Road Islamabad, n lack of slip roads at Banigala Chowk n Jinnah Avenue old Kurri Road. Why a U turn in front of MNA’s Farm house.

Appreciate to the Teams under the leadership of incumbent Interior Minister & Chairman CDA.
As a regular commuter in the Federal Capital, the recent reopening of previously blocked U-turns across the city has been a welcome move. This step has significantly eased traffic congestion and improved accessibility for daily travelers, reducing detours and travel time. However, the execution of this initiative requires greater planning and support from relevant authorities, particularly the Capital Development Authority (CDA) Traffic Management and Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP).
On intersections where U-turns are reopened, proper traffic signals must be installed along with visible signal timers. These additions help manage traffic flow and reduce the risk of accidents. Furthermore, zebra crossings should be clearly marked with accompanying pedestrian signals to ensure the safety of those crossing busy roads. The lack of pedestrian infrastructure at many of these reopened U-turns remains a serious safety concern.
Another overlooked but crucial aspect is the unnecessary installation of ‘cat’s eyes’—especially near U-turns. Many of these are not only irrelevant but also pose safety hazards, especially for motorcyclists. Removing them, or installing them judiciously where needed, would enhance road safety.
A growing menace that needs immediate attention is the careless use of mobile phones by drivers and motorcyclists. This reckless behavior puts everyone at risk. There is a need for stricter enforcement and perhaps public awareness campaigns to highlight the dangers of distracted driving.
The enforcement of speed limits must also be tightened. Like in the UK and other European cities, the introduction of automated speed cameras can serve as a strong deterrent against speeding. These systems have proven effective in ensuring compliance and enhancing overall road safety.
Furthermore, the condition of roads, particularly newly paved ones, deserves urgent attention. Many newly constructed or resurfaced roads develop faults within months due to substandard work or lack of quality control. Regular inspections and long-term accountability.
Lastly, heavy traffic, especially commercial vehicles, must be regulated strictly to observe maximum weight limits. Overloaded vehicles contribute not only to faster road deterioration but also pose serious safety risks to other road users.
In conclusion, while the reopening of U-turns is a step in the right direction, it must be complemented with strategic traffic management, modern safety measures, and strict enforcement to truly benefit the commuting public.
