Karachi Opens 515-Metre Korangi No. 5 Flyover to Ease Traffic

Karachi has opened a new 515-metre Korangi No. 5 Flyover, aimed at improving traffic flow between Korangi, Landhi and the surrounding industrial areas. The new elevated road is expected to provide relief to commuters using one of the city’s important corridors, where residential, commercial and heavy industrial traffic frequently creates congestion.

Sindh Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah and Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab inaugurated the Korangi-Landhi Flyover on Saturday, August 29. The project was developed on 12,000 Road at Korangi No. 5, an important route connecting residential communities with Karachi’s major industrial zones.

Rs746.628 Million Project

According to reports, the flyover cost approximately Rs746.628 million, with physical construction completed in August. The project was carried out by the Sindh government’s Works and Services Department.

The overall structure stretches 515 metres and consists of several sections designed to facilitate smoother movement of vehicles through the busy intersection.

The structure includes:

  • 240-metre bridge
  • 156-metre approach ramp
  • 119-metre descending ramp
  • 7.5-metre-wide bridge

The project had reached its final stages by August 10, when Sindh Local Government Minister Nasir Hussain Shah inspected the construction work. Officials briefed him that the remaining work was nearing completion and that the flyover would soon be opened to traffic.

Expected to Improve Korangi and Landhi Connectivity

Korangi and Landhi are among Karachi’s important industrial and residential districts. Traffic in these areas includes private cars, motorcycles, public transport and a significant volume of commercial and industrial vehicles.

The new flyover is intended to separate through traffic from vehicles using the intersection below, potentially reducing delays at Korangi No. 5 during peak hours.

Authorities also expect the project to improve connectivity towards Ibrahim Hyderi and Shah Faisal Colony, providing commuters with better movement between several surrounding areas.

For workers travelling to and from the industrial zones, reducing delays on this corridor could also make daily commuting more predictable.

Rs4 Billion Development Allocation

The Korangi No. 5 Flyover is part of broader infrastructure spending planned for the district. Sindh government officials have reportedly allocated Rs4 billion for development work across the Korangi and Landhi industrial areas.

The allocation is divided equally between the two zones, with the wider objective of improving infrastructure in areas that play an important role in Karachi’s industrial and commercial activity.

Will the Flyover Actually Reduce Congestion?

While the new flyover provides additional road capacity, its long-term impact will depend on how traffic behaves around the surrounding intersections.

One of the challenges with individual road infrastructure projects in Karachi is that removing a bottleneck at one location can sometimes result in traffic queues forming at the next intersection. Therefore, the effectiveness of the Korangi No. 5 Flyover will ultimately depend on how well it integrates with the roads and junctions around it.

For now, the opening represents another major road infrastructure addition for Karachi’s eastern and industrial districts. If traffic is distributed effectively, the Korangi No. 5 Flyover could reduce travel delays and improve connectivity between Korangi, Landhi and nearby industrial areas.
