China has introduced a major breakthrough in electric vehicle technology with the launch of a new battery that can charge in just over six minutes. Developed by battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd, the innovation could significantly reduce charging time concerns and accelerate global EV adoption.
The new Shenxing battery uses lithium iron phosphate chemistry and delivers rapid charging performance. According to the company, it can charge from 10 percent to 98 percent in just six minutes and 27 seconds under optimal conditions.
The battery also reaches 80 percent charge in under four minutes. This represents a major improvement over current fast charging systems and brings EV charging closer to the time it takes to refuel a traditional petrol vehicle.
CATL stated that the battery can gain up to 35 percent charge in less than one minute. This performance surpasses earlier benchmarks in the industry, including recent fast charging claims from competing manufacturers.
Faster Charging and Real World Performance
The breakthrough is linked to improvements in battery design and internal resistance. CATL reduced internal resistance to 0.25 milliohms, which allows faster energy flow and reduces heat generation during charging.
The company also highlighted the battery’s ability to perform in extreme conditions. In tests conducted at temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius, the battery charged from 10 percent to 98 percent in about nine minutes. This suggests improved reliability for users in colder climates.
Fast charging has remained one of the main challenges for electric vehicles. Long charging times often limit convenience compared to conventional fuel powered cars. By reducing charging time to just a few minutes, the new battery could help remove a key barrier for potential buyers.
The Shenxing battery is expected to support wider adoption of electric vehicles across different markets. Faster charging can improve usability for daily commuting as well as long distance travel.
