BMW iX5 Could Deliver 450 Miles of Range on a Single Charge

BMW has raised its expected driving range for the upcoming all-electric iX5, giving the luxury SUV a stronger position ahead of its planned US launch in early 2027. The German automaker initially targeted an estimated EPA range of 435 miles, but it now expects the electric SUV to cover up to 450 miles on a single charge.

BMW shared the updated estimate during the recent launch event for its new X5 lineup. However, the figure remains provisional, with the official EPA rating expected in the coming weeks.

BMW iX5 Combines Long Range With a Large Battery

The BMW iX5 xDrive60 will use a 144-kilowatt-hour battery pack, the largest battery capacity fitted to a BMW production vehicle to date. Its substantial capacity plays a central role in the SUV’s projected driving range, helping BMW target longer journeys between charging stops.

The iX5 uses BMW’s sixth-generation battery technology, known as Gen 6. It shares the same basic number and arrangement of battery cells as the electric iX3 and i3, but its cells stand 25 millimetres taller to provide greater overall capacity.

BMW also uses a different cylindrical cell format in the iX5. The SUV features 46120 cells, while the iX3 and i3 use 4695 cells. This larger battery configuration helps distinguish the electric X5 from its smaller electric siblings.

BMW’s decision to target 450 miles reflects its focus on practical, real-world driving. Company representatives have explained that a range above 400 miles could help reduce drivers’ concerns about finding enough energy for longer trips. Extra capacity also provides a useful buffer for energy-intensive activities such as high-speed driving and air conditioning.

Fast Charging Adds to the iX5’s Appeal

Long driving range is only part of the package. BMW says the iX5 will support charging at rates of up to 460 kilowatts, allowing the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 22 minutes under suitable conditions.

Actual charging times will depend on factors such as charger capability, battery temperature and charging conditions. Drivers will need access to compatible high-power charging equipment to benefit from the vehicle’s maximum charging rate.

The iX5’s combination of a large battery and high charging power could make it a compelling option for buyers who want an electric luxury SUV without frequent, lengthy charging stops.

BMW is also expanding its long-range electric vehicle lineup through its newer Neue Klasse technology. The iX3 carries an estimated range of 435 miles, while the electric i3 has achieved a reported 468-mile rating. These figures place the iX5 among a growing group of electric vehicles designed to travel more than 400 miles between charges.

US Launch Expected in Early 2027

BMW plans to bring the iX5 to market in the first quarter of 2027. The final EPA range figure should provide a clearer picture of how the SUV performs under the US agency’s standardised testing procedures.

For now, the 450-mile estimate is not an official EPA rating. Buyers should therefore treat it as BMW’s current target rather than a confirmed range figure.

If the electric X5 reaches that target, it will offer substantial range alongside a 144 kWh battery and charging capability of up to 460 kW. Those specifications could make the iX5 an important addition to BMW’s growing electric lineup as the company competes in the premium electric SUV market.
