By Rivian has officially started delivering the new R2 electric SUV, and one optional feature is drawing attention for a very practical reason. While many modern electric vehicles have removed spare tires completely, Rivian has decided to offer buyers a compact spare wheel kit for the R2.
The move stands out in today’s EV market, where most manufacturers now rely on tire repair kits instead of full emergency wheel solutions. Rivian’s decision adds an extra layer of convenience for drivers who travel long distances or frequently drive in remote areas.
The Rivian R2 is designed as a midsize electric SUV aimed at adventure focused buyers. The company has positioned the vehicle as a more affordable option compared to the larger R1S and R1T models while still maintaining the rugged identity Rivian is known for.
The optional spare tire package includes a compact spare wheel, a manual jack, and a lug wrench. Rivian designed the kit to fit beneath the rear cargo floor so owners can store it without losing significant luggage space.
Many electric vehicles currently on the market no longer include spare tires because manufacturers want to reduce vehicle weight and improve efficiency. Popular EVs such as the Tesla Model Y, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Ford Mustang Mach E, and Kia EV6 mainly provide tire repair kits instead of physical spare wheels.
However, drivers often face problems when tire damage becomes too severe for a repair kit to handle. In those situations, owners may need roadside assistance or towing services, especially during highway travel or outdoor trips.
Rivian appears to be targeting that concern directly with the R2.
Rivian Expands Accessories For Adventure Focused Buyers
Alongside the launch of the R2, Rivian also introduced several official accessories designed for travel, storage, and outdoor use. The accessory lineup includes roof crossbars, cargo covers, screen protectors, and upgraded wheel packages.
The company is also offering all terrain wheel options for buyers who plan to use the SUV on rough roads or trails. This fits Rivian’s broader branding strategy, which focuses heavily on outdoor adventure and active lifestyles.
The spare tire option may especially appeal to buyers planning road trips, camping journeys, or off road travel where immediate roadside support may not always be available.
The first R2 deliveries currently include high performance versions equipped with dual electric motors. These models produce up to 656 horsepower and can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in approximately 3.6 seconds.
Rivian estimates the driving range at around 330 miles on a full charge using the larger battery setup. More affordable variants to arrive later as production increases.
The R2 also represents an important product for Rivian’s future growth. The company aims to reach a wider group of EV buyers by offering a smaller and lower priced electric SUV compared to its premium flagship models.
