Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz Approves Gujranwala Mass Transit System Design

In a major development for urban infrastructure in Gujranwala, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has officially approved the design of the Gujranwala Mass Transit System. This ambitious project is expected to revolutionize public transportation in the city by introducing a modern, efficient, and environmentally sustainable transit network.

The approval was granted during a high-level meeting chaired by the chief minister, where officials presented detailed plans and proposals focused on improving commuting facilities. The project aims to address long-standing traffic congestion issues while offering residents a reliable and comfortable alternative to traditional transport.

Key Features of the Gujranwala Mass Transit System

The proposed transit system will span approximately 31.5 kilometers, connecting Gakhar to Eminabad. It will include a total of 24 stations, with two planned as underground stations to ensure smooth traffic flow in densely populated areas. A notable highlight of the project is the in-principle approval of a 17 to 19-kilometer underground track section, which will significantly reduce surface congestion.

To further enhance accessibility, feeder bus services will be introduced to connect various neighborhoods of Gujranwala to the metro train network. This integrated approach aims to ensure that residents from all parts of the city can benefit from the system.

Sustainable and Smart Infrastructure

The Gujranwala Mass Transit System is being designed with sustainability in mind. Solar power systems will be installed at every station and depot, reducing the project’s environmental footprint and promoting clean energy use. Additionally, depots will be established in key areas such as Garjakh, Chand Da Qila, and Gondlanwala.

The project also includes the construction of a 62-kilometer drainage system along both sides of the route, which will help manage water flow and improve urban infrastructure. A state-of-the-art command and control center will be set up to monitor operations, ensuring efficiency, safety, and real-time management of the transit network.

Timeline and Vision

Authorities have set an ambitious timeline of 12 months for the completion of the project, reflecting the government’s commitment to fast-track development. Speaking at the meeting, Maryam Nawaz emphasized that the initiative would transform the transport culture of Gujranwala and provide residents with facilities that meet international standards.

She described the project as a “gift” for the people of the city, highlighting its potential to improve daily commuting, boost economic activity, and enhance overall quality of life.

A Step Toward Modern Urban Mobility

The Gujranwala Mass Transit System marks a significant step toward modernizing urban transport in Pakistan. By integrating metro services, feeder buses, and eco-friendly technologies, the project aims to create a seamless and efficient mobility solution for one of Punjab’s busiest cities.

If completed as planned, this initiative could serve as a model for future public transport projects across the country, reinforcing the importance of sustainable and inclusive urban development.
