Pakistan’s automotive industry is set for another major development as Hub Power Company Limited (HUBCO) plans to begin local production of Chinese automaker BYD’s vehicles in December 2026. The Sealion 6 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) is expected to become the first BYD model to be locally assembled in Pakistan, marking an important milestone in the country’s growing electric vehicle (EV) market.
According to a management briefing reported by Arif Habib Limited (AHL), HUBCO is targeting the commencement of Completely Knocked Down (CKD) production by December 2026. The development is expected to strengthen BYD’s position in Pakistan by supporting local assembly, improving production capabilities and potentially expanding its vehicle lineup.
BYD Sales in Pakistan Cross 10,000 Units
HUBCO’s electric mobility business is reportedly gaining momentum, with cumulative BYD sales in Pakistan exceeding 10,000 units. According to AHL, the business generated an estimated profit of Rs. 1.5 billion during the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, while HUBCO’s share of the profit amounted to approximately Rs. 780 million.
The growing sales figures highlight increasing consumer interest in premium electric and hybrid vehicles in Pakistan. With local assembly expected to begin, BYD could further strengthen its market presence and expand its reach among Pakistani car buyers.
BYD Sealion 6 Expected to Be First Locally Assembled Model
The BYD Sealion 6 PHEV is expected to become the first model produced locally at the upcoming manufacturing facility. The plug-in hybrid SUV combines electric driving technology with a petrol-powered engine, offering an alternative for consumers interested in electrified mobility.
Besides the Sealion 6, HUBCO is evaluating additional BYD models, particularly vehicles targeting the higher-volume B and C segments. According to AHL, the Sealion 6, B8 and B5 are expected around the end of calendar year 2026.
The introduction of additional models could help BYD cater to a wider range of customers and strengthen its competitiveness in Pakistan’s automotive market.
BYD Manufacturing Plant Near Karachi
The BYD and Mega Motor Company (MMC) manufacturing facility near Karachi is expected to have an initial production capacity of 25,000 vehicles annually on a double-shift basis. However, the plant’s production capacity could eventually increase to 50,000 vehicles per year, depending on market demand and future expansion plans.
The facility represents a significant investment in Pakistan’s automotive manufacturing sector and could support the development of a local supply chain, employment opportunities and technology transfer.
HUBCO’s Partnership with BYD in Pakistan
BYD entered Pakistan’s passenger vehicle market in March 2024 through a partnership with Mega Conglomerate Pvt. Ltd. The partnership structure was subsequently clarified through HUBCO’s wholly owned subsidiary, Hub Power Holdings, and its associated company, Mega Motor Company.
MMC is responsible for the manufacturing, marketing and distribution of BYD-branded passenger vehicles in Pakistan. HUBCO is also exploring opportunities to develop EV charging infrastructure, leveraging its existing experience in the power generation sector.
This strategy reflects HUBCO’s broader ambition to participate in Pakistan’s evolving electric mobility ecosystem, extending beyond vehicle sales into manufacturing and charging solutions.
What Local BYD Production Means for Pakistan
The start of local BYD vehicle production could be an important step towards accelerating electric and hybrid vehicle adoption in Pakistan. Local assembly may help reduce reliance on imported completely built-up (CBU) vehicles, improve supply availability and create opportunities for greater localisation over time.
However, the final impact on vehicle prices will depend on localisation levels, import duties, taxes, production costs and exchange rate movements.
With BYD’s growing sales, HUBCO’s investment and a manufacturing facility capable of producing up to 50,000 vehicles annually, Pakistan’s EV industry could witness significant growth in the coming years.
The planned December 2026 production start will therefore be closely watched by automotive industry stakeholders and consumers alike.
