M-4 Motorway Expansion: Faisalabad to Pindi Bhattian Section to Become Six Lanes by 2027

Pakistan’s motorway network is set for another major upgrade as the government accelerates the expansion of the Faisalabad–Pindi Bhattian section of the M-4 Motorway from four to six lanes. The 53-kilometre expansion project is targeted for completion by the beginning of 2027, with the government aiming to present Faisalabad residents with a modern motorway as a New Year gift.

Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan announced the completion target during his visit to the ongoing construction project at Kamalpur Interchange in Faisalabad on November 1, 2026. He inspected construction activities and directed the relevant authorities to speed up work to meet the proposed deadline.

The project addresses a long-standing demand of Faisalabad residents, who have been seeking an upgrade of this important motorway section for approximately 30 years.

M-4 Motorway to Become a Modern Six-Lane Highway

Under the expansion plan, the existing four-lane Faisalabad–Pindi Bhattian section will be upgraded to a six-lane motorway, providing three lanes in each direction.

The additional road capacity is expected to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and provide a smoother driving experience for motorists travelling between Faisalabad and Pindi Bhattian.

The M-4 is an important part of Pakistan’s motorway network, connecting Faisalabad with other major cities and facilitating passenger and commercial transportation. Faisalabad is one of Pakistan’s major industrial and business centres, making efficient road connectivity particularly important for the movement of goods and people.

The expansion is therefore expected to benefit private motorists, transport operators, businesses and the wider industrial sector.

Abdul Aleem Khan Directs Authorities to Accelerate Construction

During his inspection at Kamalpur Interchange, Federal Minister Abdul Aleem Khan instructed the National Highway Authority (NHA) and project contractors to increase the number of machinery units and workers to accelerate construction activities.

The minister emphasised that the project must be completed within the announced timeline without compromising construction quality.

He also stated that the project funding had been arranged by the National Highway Authority through its own financial resources, meaning there should be no unnecessary delays in completing the work.

According to officials, the construction project has been divided into three sections, with the National Logistics Cell (NLC) and other construction organisations participating in the development work.

Green Belts, Date Palm Trees and Modern Rest Areas Planned

Apart from expanding road capacity, the government is also planning to improve the overall appearance and facilities of the Faisalabad–Pindi Bhattian Motorway.

The upgraded motorway will feature trees along both sides of the road, green belts in the central section and date palm trees as part of its landscaping and beautification plan.

Modern rest areas are also planned to provide better facilities for passengers travelling along this route. These facilities are expected to improve convenience for families and long-distance motorists.

The communications minister has directed officials to finalise the designs of the proposed rest areas within one week. He has also instructed authorities to ensure proper lighting arrangements along the entire Faisalabad–Pindi Bhattian section.

These improvements are intended to make motorway travel more comfortable, particularly during nighttime journeys.

Improved Road Safety and Traffic Management

Road safety is another major objective of the M-4 expansion project. The additional lanes are expected to reduce traffic pressure and provide more space for vehicles, helping minimise congestion-related risks.

Improved lighting, modern rest facilities and better road infrastructure will further contribute to safer journeys.

The minister also paid tribute to Motorway Police personnel who lost their lives while performing their duties, highlighting the importance of providing safe working conditions for law enforcement officials responsible for motorway safety.

M-4 Motorway Expansion Completion Target

The government aims to complete the 53-kilometre Faisalabad–Pindi Bhattian M-4 Motorway expansion by the beginning of 2027. The minister has instructed the authorities to accelerate construction and maintain quality standards to achieve the target.

Once completed, the upgraded six-lane motorway is expected to improve connectivity, support commercial transportation and provide better travel facilities to thousands of commuters.

The project represents an important infrastructure development for Faisalabad and surrounding areas, fulfilling a decades-old demand while supporting Pakistan’s broader efforts to modernise its road and motorway network.

With six lanes, improved lighting, green belts and modern rest areas, the Faisalabad–Pindi Bhattian M-4 expansion is expected to bring a significant improvement to motorway travel in Punjab.
