Pakistan Plans Fast Train Between Lahore and Rawalpindi

Punjab is set to take a major step toward modernizing its rail network with plans for a fast train between Lahore and Rawalpindi. The proposed service aims to cut travel time between the two major cities to just 2 hours and 15 minutes, offering a significant improvement over current rail journeys.

The initiative comes after the Punjab government and Pakistan Railways signed a memorandum of understanding to introduce faster and more efficient train services. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi formalized the agreement, signaling strong political backing for the project.

The Lahore Rawalpindi fast train stands out as the flagship development. If completed as planned, it will provide a quicker and more reliable option for passengers traveling for business, family visits, and official purposes. A journey that currently takes several hours could become much more convenient, potentially shifting commuter preference back toward rail travel.

Expansion Across Multiple Rail Routes

The agreement goes beyond a single route. Authorities plan to develop and upgrade nine railway corridors across Punjab. This broader network aims to improve connectivity between major cities as well as smaller districts.

Key routes included in the plan cover a wide geographic area. These include Shahdara to Narowal, Narowal to Sialkot, and Raiwind through Kasur and Pakpattan to Lodhran. Other routes connect Sheikhupura to Shorkot, Faisalabad via Chak Jhumra, and Kot Addu through Dera Ghazi Khan to Kashmore.

These corridors extend the project’s reach beyond central Punjab into southern regions. This wider scope increases the potential impact on regional mobility and access to transportation.

Officials say the project will help reduce travel times, ease road congestion, and provide a more reliable alternative to long-distance road travel. Rail transport offers a cost-effective solution for daily commuters and long-distance passengers alike.

The economic impact could also be significant. Improved rail links can support trade and business activity by connecting commercial hubs more efficiently. Better transportation infrastructure often leads to increased mobility for workers and improved access to markets.

The project is expected to benefit around 90 million people across the province. This highlights its scale and importance beyond just one high-speed route.

Despite the announcement, key details remain unclear. Authorities have not yet shared a full timeline for construction or launch. Passengers and industry observers will look for updates on implementation, infrastructure upgrades, and service operations.

The signing of the agreement marks an important first step. However, the success of the project will depend on how quickly it moves from planning to execution.

If completed as planned, the Lahore Rawalpindi fast train and the wider rail network could reshape travel patterns across Punjab. Faster and more connected rail services may encourage more people to choose trains over road transport.

The initiative reflects a broader effort to revive and modernize Pakistan’s railway system. With strong execution, it could play a key role in improving transportation and supporting economic growth in the region.
