Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz officially inaugurated Lahore’s first electric bus service on Friday, marking a significant step towards sustainable urban transportation in the city. The pilot project, spearheaded by Transport Minister Bilal Akbar, aims to provide eco-friendly, efficient, and secure travel for commuters.

Key Features of the Electric Buses

The newly introduced electric buses come equipped with modern amenities, including:

  • GPS Tracking: Enabling real-time location updates for better route management.
  • Wi-Fi Connectivity: Ensuring passengers stay connected during their commute.
  • USB Charging Ports: Allowing travelers to charge their electronic devices on the go.
  • Accessible Seating: Designated seats for differently-abled passengers to promote inclusivity.
  • Anti-Slip Flooring: Ensuring passenger safety during travel.

Each bus has a seating capacity of 30 passengers, with space to accommodate up to 80 commuters at a time.

Security and Passenger Convenience

To ensure passenger safety, CCTV cameras have been installed on all buses to prevent harassment and monitor activities. The buses will operate on a 21-kilometer route stretching from the railway station to Green Town, covering key areas such as Queens Road, Mozang, Ferozepur Road, and PU Campus Bridge.

Operational and Payment Details

  • Buses will arrive at intervals of every nine minutes to minimize waiting times for passengers.
  • A total of 27 electric buses will be operational during the initial phase.
  • Fares can be conveniently paid through digital wallets, transport cards, and universal payment systems.
  • A dedicated mobile app for real-time bus tracking will be launched soon.

Infrastructure Developments

To support the new service, 42 bus shelters are currently under construction across the designated route. These shelters will offer essential amenities and provide a comfortable waiting area for commuters.

Full-Scale Launch by Mid-February

The pilot project will be fully operational by mid-February 2025, offering a reliable and sustainable public transport option for Lahore residents. The initiative is part of the government’s broader vision to reduce urban pollution and improve the public transport network.

The launch of Lahore’s electric bus service represents a crucial step towards green mobility and enhanced commuter convenience. With state-of-the-art features and strong security measures, the service promises to revolutionize public transport in the city.
