By BYD is preparing a significantly upgraded second-generation Seagull electric car with more power, additional interior space and much faster charging. The new model, also known as the Dolphin Surf in Europe, will introduce an 800-volt electrical architecture and BYD’s Flash Charging technology.
The compact EV will continue targeting the affordable end of the electric car market. However, its updated specifications move it considerably beyond the capabilities of the outgoing model.
Larger Body and More Interior Space
The new BYD Seagull remains a small electric hatchback, but its dimensions have increased substantially. It measures 4,205 mm long, 1,810 mm wide and 1,570 mm tall.
Its wheelbase now stretches to 2,650 mm, an increase of 150 mm over the previous model. The additional length and wheelbase should create more usable space inside the cabin.
The new model will also accommodate five occupants instead of four. This addresses one of the limitations of the current Seagull, which offers relatively limited space for four adults.
More Power With Rear-Wheel Drive
BYD has made a major change to the Seagull’s powertrain. The outgoing version uses a front-mounted electric motor producing 73 horsepower.
The new model moves to a rear-mounted motor with 127 hp. This gives the electric hatchback a substantial increase in output while also making it rear-wheel drive.
The revised layout creates another useful addition. The new Seagull gains a front trunk, providing extra storage space that was unavailable on the previous version.
BYD has also upgraded the chassis. The new EV uses wider 205 mm tyres on 16-inch wheels, while the rear suspension switches to an independent multi-link setup.
Five-Minute Charging Becomes the Headline Feature
The biggest change comes from the battery and charging system. The new Seagull will use an 800-volt electrical architecture with a lithium iron phosphate battery.
Buyers will reportedly have two battery options, with capacities of 30 kWh and 39.2 kWh. BYD’s Flash Charging technology is designed to deliver an extremely rapid energy top-up.
According to the reported specifications, the battery can reach 70% charge in as little as five minutes. A charge level of 97% can reportedly be achieved in around nine minutes. That charging capability could significantly reduce one of the biggest practical drawbacks associated with smaller EVs.
Up to 420 km of CLTC Range
The larger battery also provides a substantial driving range for a compact electric car. The 30 kWh version is rated for up to 320 km under the CLTC testing cycle. The 39.2 kWh version increases the claimed range to 420 km.
Real-world range will vary depending on speed, temperature, road conditions and driving style. The CLTC figures also should not be directly compared with WLTP or EPA ratings.
More Technology Inside
The upgraded Seagull will receive a more technology-focused cabin. A large central touchscreen will serve as the main interface for infotainment and vehicle functions.
BYD is also expected to offer a lidar-based advanced driver assistance system on the new model. This would give the affordable EV access to driver-assistance technology that is typically associated with more expensive vehicles.
The combination of faster charging, greater range and additional technology could make the new Seagull considerably more competitive in the entry-level EV segment.
BYD Targets Affordable EV Buyers
The original Seagull has become one of BYD’s most important affordable electric models, particularly in China. Its low price has helped it attract buyers looking for an inexpensive alternative to conventional petrol-powered city cars.
BYD has not yet confirmed final pricing for the second-generation model. However, the new Seagull is expected to remain focused on the affordable EV segment in China.

The company has also not confirmed whether the updated model will reach European markets. The European Dolphin Surf already uses a modified version of the Seagull to meet regional safety requirements.
With a larger body, rear-wheel drive, up to 420 km of claimed CLTC range and charging that can reach 70% in five minutes, the new BYD Seagull represents a major technical step forward for BYD’s smallest EV.
