By Renault has introduced a bold new electric concept that moves away from the typical smooth and futuristic EV look. The new Renault 4 JP4x4 Concept combines retro styling, open air driving, and off road character in a package designed for beach trips and outdoor adventures.
The French automaker revealed the concept as a creative showcase for its electric vehicle platform. Unlike many modern EVs that focus heavily on aerodynamics and minimalist styling, this concept embraces a playful and rugged design approach.
The vehicle takes inspiration from older Renault models, including the original JP4 from the 1980s and the Plein Air from the late 1960s. However, Renault updated the formula with a fully electric setup and modern technology.
Renault combines retro styling with electric power
The Renault 4 JP4x4 Concept starts with the standard Renault 4 E Tech platform but transforms it into an open air utility vehicle. Designers removed the doors and roof panels while adding structural support beams to maintain body strength.
The concept also features a drop down rear tailgate, giving it a practical outdoor focused design similar to a compact pickup.
Bright styling details help the vehicle stand out even further. Renault finished the exterior in Emerald Green paint while using orange accents throughout the cabin. The bold color combination reinforces the vehicle’s playful personality.
Unlike the production Renault 4 E Tech, which uses front wheel drive, the concept adds electric motors to both axles for all wheel drive capability. Renault also increased the ride height by 15 millimeters and fitted larger tires to improve traction on loose surfaces such as sand or gravel.
Wider front and rear tracks further improve stability and handling for light off road driving.
Inside, Renault continued the retro inspired theme with bucket seats influenced by classic Renault designs from the 1970s. The cabin also includes practical storage solutions and mounting points designed for outdoor gear such as skateboards and picnic equipment.
Vintage Inspired Styling
Despite its vintage inspired styling, the concept still keeps the dual screen dashboard layout from the production Renault 4 E Tech.
Renault says the vehicle currently remains a design study and not a production model. The company has not announced plans to bring the concept into mass production, and safety regulations would likely require major changes before any road legal version could reach showrooms.
Even so, the concept highlights the flexibility of modern EV platforms. Electric architectures allow designers to experiment with different shapes, layouts, and proportions more easily than traditional combustion vehicles.

Industry observers say concepts like the JP4x4 demonstrate how automakers can create more emotional and lifestyle focused EVs rather than only prioritizing efficiency and range numbers.
The reveal also reflects a growing trend among European brands to use electric vehicles as a platform for more creative and adventurous designs.
While many modern EVs follow similar styling patterns, Renault’s latest concept shows there is still room for originality and personality in the electric vehicle market.
