Smart has unveiled the next generation of its iconic city car, introducing the all new Smart 2 EV. The compact two door electric vehicle marks the return of the brand’s original concept, now updated with significantly improved range and modern technology.
The Smart 2 is currently presented as a concept, but a production version is expected to debut later this year. The new model draws inspiration from the original Smart Fortwo, which became known worldwide for its ultra compact size and urban practicality.
Like its predecessor, the Smart 2 features a two door layout with seating for two passengers. The design remains focused on city driving, where compact dimensions make parking and maneuvering easier. Despite its small footprint, the new model promises a much more capable electric powertrain.

One of the most notable improvements is the driving range. The Smart 2 is expected to deliver around 186 miles on a single charge. This marks a major upgrade compared to the previous EQ Fortwo, which offered a much shorter range and limited usability for longer trips.
Charging performance has also improved significantly. The new EV can charge from 10 percent to 80 percent in under 20 minutes under ideal conditions. This faster charging capability enhances convenience for urban drivers who rely on quick top ups during daily use.
Modern Platform and New Technology
The Smart 2 will be built on a new electric platform known as the Electric Compact Architecture. This platform is developed under the joint venture between Mercedes Benz and Geely, with production taking place in China.

The updated platform enables better efficiency, improved battery performance, and support for modern features. One of these features is vehicle to load capability, which allows the car to supply power to external devices such as small appliances and electronics.
While the interior has not been fully revealed, the production version is expected to include a digital instrument cluster and a central infotainment screen. These updates will align the Smart 2 with other modern electric vehicles in terms of connectivity and user experience.
The final production model will likely feature a toned down design compared to the concept. Some of the more dramatic styling elements may be simplified, but the overall identity of the vehicle will remain intact.

In terms of size, the Smart 2 is expected to remain close to the dimensions of the original Fortwo. This will make it one of the smallest electric cars available in Europe when it launches. It will compete with other compact EVs such as the Renault Twingo and Dacia Spring.

The return of the Smart two door EV reflects a renewed focus on urban mobility. As cities continue to grow and space becomes more limited, compact electric vehicles offer a practical solution for daily transportation.
With improved range, faster charging, and updated technology, the Smart 2 aims to build on the legacy of its predecessor while meeting modern expectations. The upcoming production version will play a key role in determining how the brand evolves in the competitive EV market.
