Mercedes EQS Update Brings More Range and Faster Charging

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a major update for its flagship electric sedan, the EQS, introducing significant improvements in range, charging speed, and technology. The refreshed model will arrive as a 2027 version in the United States during the second half of 2026.

The update marks an important step for the EQS, which serves as the electric counterpart to the S-Class. While the design remains largely familiar, Mercedes has focused on upgrading key components to enhance performance and efficiency.

One of the biggest changes is the shift to an 800-volt electrical architecture. This upgrade allows the EQS to support charging speeds of up to 350 kilowatts. As a result, the car can add up to 199 miles of range in just 10 minutes under WLTP testing conditions when connected to a compatible fast charger. On standard 400-volt chargers, peak charging reaches 175 kilowatts.

The battery capacity has also increased. The updated EQS now features a 122 kilowatt hour battery, up from 118 kilowatt hours in the previous version. Combined with improved efficiency and a new two-speed transmission on the rear motor, the sedan delivers a claimed WLTP range of up to 575 miles for the EQS 450 plus variant. This makes it the longest-range electric vehicle currently offered by Mercedes-Benz.

Technology and Performance Enhancements

Mercedes has introduced several new technologies to improve the driving experience. One of the most notable features is the optional steer by wire system. This system replaces the traditional steering wheel with a yoke and reduces the amount of steering input required. It also increases the rear steering angle to 10 degrees, improving maneuverability in tight spaces.

The updated EQS also benefits from stronger regenerative braking. The system can recover energy at rates of up to 385 kilowatts, helping improve efficiency during everyday driving. In many situations, the electric motors handle most of the braking, reducing reliance on traditional friction brakes.

Inside the cabin, the EQS features the latest MB OS operating system. The system runs on the large Hyperscreen display, which spans 55 inches across the dashboard. It includes integrated Google Maps, multi-agent artificial intelligence features, and over the air updates for continuous improvements.

Driver assistance systems have also been upgraded. The vehicle now uses 27 sensors and cameras to enhance safety and enable advanced features such as automatic obstacle avoidance in certain conditions.

Design changes remain subtle but noticeable. The front end now includes a revised grille and updated hood design. The lighting system has also been improved, with new digital lights that provide better illumination while using less energy. At the rear, redesigned LED elements give the car a wider and more refined appearance.

Additional comfort features include heated seatbelts, which aim to improve both comfort and safety during colder conditions.

Despite the extensive upgrades, the overall shape of the EQS remains largely unchanged. The familiar design continues to divide opinion among buyers, even as the technology underneath sees major improvements.

The updated EQS reflects Mercedes-Benz’s ongoing effort to refine its electric flagship. With longer range, faster charging, and advanced features, the new model aims to strengthen its position in the competitive luxury EV segment.
