By Google is rolling out a major update to Android Auto that brings built in electric vehicle route planning through Google Maps. The new feature aims to simplify long distance travel for EV drivers by automatically suggesting charging stops and estimating battery usage.
The update will support more than 350 electric vehicle models from at least 15 automotive brands. This wide compatibility makes it one of the most accessible EV route planning tools available across different manufacturers.
With electric vehicle adoption increasing globally, route planning has become an important part of the driving experience. Many drivers still rely on third party apps to manage charging stops during road trips.
How the EV Route Planning Feature Works
The new feature uses vehicle specific data to improve route accuracy. Drivers must first select their car’s make and model on their smartphone. This allows Google Maps to estimate battery consumption based on the vehicle’s specifications.
Once a destination is entered, the system calculates the expected battery usage for the trip. It then recommends when and where to stop for charging along the route.
Key features of the system include:
- Battery usage prediction based on vehicle type
- Suggested charging stops along the route
- Estimated charging time at each stop
- Ability to set preferred battery level at arrival
Google uses artificial intelligence combined with real time data to power the feature. The system analyzes factors such as traffic conditions, road elevation, weather, and vehicle weight to improve accuracy.
Drivers will need to manually enter their starting battery level. After that, the system updates estimates automatically as the trip progresses.
Unlike some advanced tools, the feature does not directly connect to the vehicle’s onboard systems. This means it may not provide real time battery data as precisely as some dedicated EV apps.
The new feature will compete with popular tools such as A Better Route Planner, which offers more advanced integration for certain vehicles.
However, Google Maps has a major advantage in usability. Many drivers already rely on it for navigation, and integrating EV planning into a familiar interface could improve the overall experience.
The feature is especially useful for vehicles that lack strong built in route planning systems. While brands like Tesla and Rivian already offer advanced native solutions, many other automakers still lag behind in this area.

Supported brands at launch include major names such as BMW, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes Benz, Toyota, and Volkswagen. Google says more brands and models will be added over time.
By bringing EV route planning directly into Android Auto, Google is addressing one of the key challenges of electric vehicle ownership. The update could make road trips easier and more predictable for a large number of drivers using compatible vehicles.
