By Ahead of the busy Eid-ul-Fitr travel season, the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) has issued a comprehensive advisory for passengers and transport operators to ensure safe and fair travel across Pakistan’s highways.
The directives were issued on the instructions of Munir Ahmed Sheikh and Syed Fareed Ali, as authorities prepare for the surge in passenger traffic typically witnessed during the Eid holidays.
Strict Action Against Overcharging Transporters
According to the Motorway Police spokesperson, strict action will be taken against transporters and bus operators who attempt to overcharge passengers during the Eid travel period. Authorities said complaints about inflated fares often increase during major holidays when thousands of people travel to their hometowns to celebrate with family.
Officials warned that transport companies found exploiting passengers by charging excessive fares could face legal penalties and restrictions on operating on national highways.
Passengers have been encouraged to report any such incidents immediately.
Crackdown on Overcrowded and Unsafe Vehicles
The NHMP has also directed transport operators to strictly follow passenger capacity rules. Vehicles carrying passengers beyond the approved seating capacity will face legal action.
Authorities specifically warned against the dangerous practice of transporting passengers on bus rooftops or allowing more passengers than permitted inside the vehicle.
Such vehicles will not be allowed to enter national highways and motorways until the violations are corrected. The move aims to prevent accidents and ensure safe journeys for travelers during the peak holiday rush.
Safety Measures for Long-Distance Travel
To further enhance road safety, the Motorway Police has instructed transport operators to assign two drivers for long-distance routes. This measure is intended to reduce driver fatigue, which is considered a major factor in highway accidents.
Drivers have also been urged to exercise caution, follow traffic rules, and maintain responsible driving behavior throughout the Eid travel period.
Helpline for Passenger Complaints
Passengers facing overcharging, overcrowding, or unsafe transport conditions can contact the Motorway Police through the NHMP helpline 130. Complaints can also be lodged via the South Zone contact number 021-99333336.
Authorities say the helpline will remain active throughout the Eid holidays to assist travelers and ensure transport operators comply with safety regulations.
With millions expected to travel across the country during Eid-ul-Fitr, the National Highways and Motorway Police aims to maintain safe highways and protect passengers from exploitation during one of the busiest travel seasons of the year.
