BYD Unveils Ultra Fast EV Charging Stations With 10 Minute Charging

Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has unveiled a new generation of ultra fast charging technology designed to dramatically reduce EV charging times. The company introduced its new Flash charging stations capable of delivering up to 1500 kilowatts of power, a level that could make charging an electric vehicle nearly as quick as refueling a gasoline car.

The announcement marks another step forward in the race to develop faster and more convenient EV charging solutions. BYD also revealed a new battery technology that works together with the Flash charging system to deliver extremely rapid charging speeds.

New Flash Chargers and Blade 2.0 Battery Technology

The new Flash chargers can deliver peak charging power of 1500 kilowatts. This output is made possible through a system that combines 1500 amps of current with a 1000 volt electrical architecture.

For comparison, many of the fastest public chargers in the United States currently operate at around 250 to 400 kilowatts. Even Tesla’s latest V4 Superchargers reach significantly lower peak power levels than the new BYD system.

The chargers are designed to work with BYD’s second generation Blade lithium iron phosphate battery, known as Blade 2.0. When paired with this battery technology, the charging performance improves significantly.

According to the company, vehicles equipped with the Blade 2.0 battery can charge from 10 percent to 70 percent in roughly five minutes when connected to the Flash charger. Charging to around 97 percent can take about nine minutes under optimal conditions.

BYD says the charging process intentionally stops at about 97 percent to maintain a small buffer of battery capacity. This allows the vehicle to continue using regenerative braking effectively during driving.

Real World Demonstration Shows Rapid Charging

During a demonstration event, BYD showed how the technology performs in real world conditions. A Denza Z9 GT electric vehicle was driven until its battery dropped to about 9 percent state of charge.

After connecting the vehicle to a Flash charging station, the battery gained significant range in less than ten minutes. The vehicle display showed over 1000 kilometers of estimated driving range after roughly ten minutes of charging.

These figures are based on the China Light Duty Test Cycle, which tends to produce higher range estimates than other testing standards. Even when adjusted to match stricter testing systems such as EPA estimates, the amount of range added in under ten minutes remains substantial.

Charging Stations Designed Like Gas Stations

BYD has also designed the Flash charging stations to resemble traditional fuel stations. The layout allows drivers to pull in, quickly connect their vehicle, and leave once charging is complete.

The stations use T shaped charging towers equipped with lightweight charging connectors that the company describes as easier to handle. The chargers also support plug and charge technology, which allows vehicles to automatically start charging without requiring a mobile app or payment setup.

Rapid Expansion of Charging Network

The company has already built approximately 4200 Flash charging stations across China. BYD plans to expand the network to around 20000 stations by the end of the year.

If the expansion continues as planned, more than 90 percent of urban areas in China will have access to one of these high speed chargers within about five kilometers.

To manage the massive power demand, BYD intends to equip charging locations with energy storage systems. These batteries can store electricity during periods of low demand and release it during peak charging times. They can also store excess energy generated from renewable sources such as solar power.

BYD says the Flash charging network will eventually expand beyond China to markets including Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and the Asia Pacific region.

As automakers compete to improve EV charging speed and convenience, developments like BYD’s Flash charging technology could play a major role in shaping the next generation of electric vehicle infrastructure.
