In a bid to address the growing concern over road safety, the Punjab government has implemented a new speed limit for motorcycles. Starting immediately, the speed limit for motorcycles has been capped at 60 kilometers per hour (km/h). This regulation is aimed at curbing the alarming number of road accidents caused by speeding, which have resulted in an increasing number of fatalities on the province’s roads.
A Critical Step Towards Safer Roads
The decision was announced by Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari, who expressed deep concern over the rising fatalities due to speeding. “It is heartbreaking to see lives lost due to speeding,” Bukhari said, underscoring the importance of this regulation in preventing tragic accidents. She emphasized that the new speed limit would play a crucial role in reducing the risks faced by motorcyclists and other road users alike.
Enforcement and Penalties
The Punjab government is determined to ensure the effective implementation of this new rule. Minister Bukhari confirmed that motorcycles will not be allowed to exceed 60 km/h. Strict monitoring will be carried out, and penalties will be imposed on individuals who violate this speed limit. The government is committed to enforcing these regulations to create a safer environment for all commuters.
Recent Developments in Road Safety Regulations
The Punjab government’s move follows a series of steps taken to enhance road safety across the country. For instance, Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) recently revised the speed limits on major roads in the capital. Highways like Kashmir Highway, Islamabad Highway, and Murree Road now allow 80 km/h for Light Transport Vehicles (LTVs) and 65 km/h for Heavy Transport Vehicles (HTVs). In areas such as Constitution Avenue and Jinnah Avenue, the speed limit is set at 70 km/h for LTVs and 65 km/h for HTVs.
In more sensitive areas such as near schools and hospitals, the speed limit has been reduced to 30 km/h, ensuring the safety of pedestrians and vulnerable road users.
The new speed limit for motorcycles in Punjab is a welcome measure to reduce accidents and enhance safety. By limiting motorcycle speeds to 60 km/h, the government aims to lower fatalities and create a safer, more responsible road environment. Along with the recent changes in Islamabad’s traffic regulations, these adjustments reflect a national commitment to improving road safety and reducing preventable injuries and deaths.
