Lahore’s public transport system is set to undergo a major transformation with the introduction of 27 electric buses, expected to hit the streets in the coming weeks. On January 15, Punjab Transport Secretary Dr. Ahmad Javid Qazi announced that these buses, imported from China, would arrive at Karachi Port six days ahead of schedule. This marks a significant step towards cleaner and more sustainable public transport in the city.

The electric buses, each priced at Rs. 88 million, have been procured as part of the provincial government’s commitment to improving urban mobility while reducing pollution. These buses are expected to operate for an impressive 12 years, with a total investment of Rs. 2.46 billion for all 27 units. Dr. Qazi further shared that Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan would supervise the buses’ receipt at Karachi Port, ensuring a smooth delivery process.

The buses will begin their operations on two key routes in Lahore, with the first phase of deployment set to launch by January 31. The first route will link Canal Road and the Railway Station to RA Bazaar, offering residents and commuters a greener alternative to traditional, fuel-powered buses. The second route is yet to be disclosed, but it promises to expand the reach of the electric bus fleet across the city.

This move is part of a larger push to reduce Lahore’s carbon footprint and encourage the adoption of environmentally friendly transportation options. The arrival of these buses is expected to set the stage for more eco-friendly projects, offering an alternative to traditional public transport systems and paving the way for sustainable development in Punjab.

As the city gears up for the arrival of these modern electric buses, residents can look forward to cleaner air and improved transportation options, marking a significant leap towards a greener future.
