In a transformative step toward enhancing public transport infrastructure, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) government has approved a Rs. 3.2 billion allocation for the procurement of 50 new diesel-hybrid buses for the Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) network. The announcement was made during the 34th provincial cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur.
This move is a response to the increasing ridership and demand for expanded services on the BRT system, which is currently operating across six main routes. With the upcoming extension to eight operational routes, the TransPeshawar fleet will increase from 244 to 294 buses, significantly improving capacity and commuter convenience.
The inclusion of diesel-hybrid buses underscores the provincial government’s push for environmentally responsible and fuel-efficient transport solutions. This investment aligns with global trends in sustainable urban mobility and is expected to reduce the environmental footprint of public transportation in Peshawar.
Previously, in 2022, 24 new buses were added to the fleet. The addition of 50 more modern hybrid buses represents a substantial scaling-up of the infrastructure.
In another major decision, the cabinet approved the merger of ZamungKor campuses from Swat, Abbottabad, Dera Ismail Khan, and the Girls Campus in Peshawar into a central autonomous institute in the provincial capital. This integration will bring 425 children under a single administration, joining the 600 students already enrolled at the main facility.
This strategic consolidation is aimed at improving administrative efficiency, optimizing resources, and ensuring consistent education and support services for state-supported children across the province.
Continuing its commitment to financial sustainability, the KPK government has added Pak Qatar Asset Management as the 13th registered entity under the Contributory Provident Fund Rules, 2022. This initiative is part of the province’s ongoing pension reform framework, initiated in 2015, which seeks to strengthen public financial management and long-term fiscal responsibility.
The cabinet also passed key amendments to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Right to Public Services Act, 2014. These changes aim to streamline service delivery, increase transparency, and enhance accountability across public service departments, ensuring better governance outcomes for citizens.
The approval of 50 new diesel-hybrid buses for Peshawar BRT, along with reforms in education, pension fund management, and service delivery, marks a progressive and people-centric approach by the KPK government. These efforts not only promote sustainable urban development but also reflect a strong focus on inclusivity, governance, and long-term economic planning.
