The Audi A2 e-tron has officially returned, bringing one of Audi’s most recognizable compact nameplates into the electric era.

More than two decades after the original Audi A2 disappeared from the market, Audi has revived the name for a completely new electric model. The new A2 e-tron is positioned as an entry-level premium EV for Europe, combining compact dimensions with long range, strong efficiency and a technology-focused interior.

Audi says the new model is its most efficient series-production vehicle ever. The most efficient version consumes just 12.8 kWh per 100 km under the WLTP test cycle and can deliver up to 646 km of claimed range.

Audi A2 e-tron Returns as a Modern Electric Car

The original Audi A2 was introduced in 1999 and became known for its lightweight construction, unusual design and focus on efficiency.

The new Audi A2 e-tron takes a very different approach while keeping some of that philosophy alive.

Audi has designed the new model around efficient use of space, aerodynamic performance and reduced energy consumption. At 4.32 metres long, it remains a compact vehicle, but its electric architecture allows Audi to create a practical interior without making the car excessively large.

The result is a model designed to bring premium electric mobility to a wider audience.

Audi originally announced the new A2 e-tron in March 2026, confirming that it would become a new entry-level electric model family in the compact class. The company also confirmed that production would take place at its Ingolstadt plant in Germany.

Audi has now officially revealed the production version of the A2 e-tron.

European deliveries are scheduled to begin in December 2026, with the model initially positioned for European customers. Up to 646 km of Electric Range

Range is one of the biggest strengths of the new Audi A2 e-tron.

Audi will offer three battery sizes, with capacities of 52 kWh, 61 kWh and 84 kWh. The largest battery allows the A2 e-tron to reach a claimed WLTP range of up to 646 km in its most efficient configuration.

Interestingly, the maximum-range version is not the most powerful model.

The range-topping performance version produces up to 240 kW, or approximately 327 horsepower, but its maximum claimed range is lower. The most efficient version focuses more heavily on reducing energy consumption and maximizing driving distance.

That approach reflects Audi’s broader strategy for the A2 e-tron. Rather than simply increasing battery size, the company has concentrated on aerodynamics and efficiency.

Efficiency Is a Major Focus

Audi describes the A2 e-tron as its most efficient series-production model.

The car can achieve energy consumption as low as 12.8 kWh per 100 km under WLTP testing. That figure places efficiency at the center of the vehicle’s identity.

Aerodynamics play an important role.

The production model has a drag coefficient of approximately 0.24, helped by features such as flush door handles, aerodynamic wheel designs and an optimized underbody.

This allows Audi to extract more range from the available battery without making the vehicle excessively large.

Performance Across Four Versions

The Audi A2 e-tron will be available with four power levels.

The range begins with a 125 kW version and extends to a 240 kW flagship model. The most powerful version produces approximately 327 horsepower and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in around 5.7 seconds.

All versions use rear-wheel drive at launch.

Audi is therefore giving customers a choice between efficiency-focused configurations and significantly more powerful versions, rather than limiting the A2 e-tron to a single powertrain.

The company is also planning further development of the model family, including the possibility of all-wheel drive at a later stage.

Charging Technology

Charging performance is another important part of the A2 e-tron’s electric package.

The largest 84 kWh battery supports DC charging at up to 183 kW. Audi says versions equipped with this battery can charge from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 29 minutes.

The smaller battery versions support charging rates of up to around 100 kW or 105 kW, depending on configuration.

Audi also says the vehicle can recover around 200 km of range in approximately 10 minutes under suitable charging conditions.

The A2 e-tron also introduces bidirectional charging technology to Audi’s compact EV lineup, potentially allowing the vehicle to send energy back to compatible systems.

A More Practical Audi Interior

The interior of the Audi A2 e-tron follows the company’s modern digital design direction.

A panoramic MMI display combines an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster with a 12.8-inch central touchscreen. The cabin also introduces Audi’s Fidlock magnetic accessory system, allowing selected items to be attached and positioned within the interior.

Audi has also focused on flexibility.

The compact exterior dimensions do not mean the interior is simply minimal. Storage solutions and a practical seating arrangement are designed to make the A2 e-tron suitable for everyday urban driving and longer journeys.

The model also includes a 13-litre front storage compartment, while rear luggage capacity reaches up to 396 litres with the seats in place and as much as 1,336 litres when they are folded.

A New Identity for Audi’s Entry-Level EVs

The significance of the Audi A2 e-tron goes beyond its name.

Audi is using the model to create a more accessible entry point into its electric vehicle range. The company faces growing pressure from affordable EV manufacturers, particularly in Europe, while consumers increasingly expect longer range without moving into larger and more expensive vehicles.

The A2 e-tron addresses that gap with a combination of premium branding, compact dimensions and strong efficiency.

Its €38,200 starting price also places it below many of Audi’s larger electric models, although it remains positioned above mainstream compact EVs.
