New 2027 Hyundai Tucson Gets Bigger With More Hybrid Power

Hyundai has unveiled the 2027 Hyundai Tucson with a larger body, stronger hybrid powertrain and a completely modernized infotainment system. The new compact SUV continues to offer gas and hybrid powertrains, while a plug-in hybrid version is also planned.

The latest Tucson uses a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine across its powertrain range. Hyundai has also increased hybrid output and efficiency while adding a new electric motor to the conventional hybrid system.

2027 Hyundai Tucson Powertrain Options

The 2027 Tucson will be available with three main powertrain configurations. Buyers can choose a conventional gasoline model, a hybrid or a plug-in hybrid.

The standard gasoline version produces 184 horsepower from its 1.6-liter turbocharged engine. The hybrid increases total output to 233 hp and 279.9 lb-ft of torque.

The new hybrid system combines two electric motors with the gasoline engine. One motor sits between the engine and six-speed automatic transmission and produces 64 hp. A second 17 hp motor connects directly to the engine crankshaft.

This additional motor replaces the belt-driven starter-generator used in the previous system. It can also assist acceleration and recover energy during deceleration.

2027 Tucson Hybrid Gets Better Fuel Economy

Hyundai has improved the Tucson Hybrid’s efficiency for the new model year.

Front-wheel-drive versions equipped with 17-inch wheels can achieve up to 42 mpg. All-wheel-drive models are rated between 40 and 42 mpg, depending on configuration.

For comparison, the previous Tucson Hybrid achieved up to 38 mpg with front-wheel drive and 36 mpg with all-wheel drive.

The new model also produces more power. Its 233 hp output is 2 hp higher than the previous generation, while torque increases from 271 to 279.9 lb-ft.

2027 Hyundai Tucson Plug-In Hybrid

The Tucson Plug-In Hybrid uses the same basic engine and electric motor layout but gets a more powerful main electric motor and a larger battery.

Its primary electric motor produces 106 hp, compared with 97 hp in the outgoing model. Combined system output reaches 288 hp, which is 20 hp more than the previous generation.

Hyundai has also increased battery capacity from 13.8 kWh to 17.1 kWh. The company estimates around 50 miles of electric driving, although it has not yet confirmed which testing cycle produced that figure.

The previous Tucson PHEV had an EPA-rated electric range of 32 miles. The PHEV does not support DC fast charging. Its onboard AC charger is rated at up to 7.2 kW. Hyundai has not yet confirmed the full U.S. availability details for the 2027 Tucson Plug-In Hybrid.

The New Tucson Is Larger

The 2027 Tucson grows in almost every dimension. It measures 185 inches long, 75 inches wide and 66.3 inches tall. Its wheelbase stretches to 109.6 inches.

Compared with the outgoing model, the new Tucson is 2.3 inches longer, 1.57 inches wider and 0.8 inches taller.

Hyundai has also increased rear-door opening angles to 83 degrees. Standard versions offer 7.1 inches of ground clearance, while the XRT PRO receives an additional 1.1 inches for a total of 8.2 inches. Cargo capacity reaches 41.7 cubic feet.

Pleos Connect Brings New Infotainment

Technology is another major focus for the 2027 Tucson.

Hyundai introduces its Pleos Connect infotainment platform, which uses Android Automotive OS. Depending on the configuration, the system features a 12.9-inch or 17-inch central display alongside a 9.9-inch digital instrument cluster.

The system includes Gleo AI, Hyundai’s voice assistant designed to understand more complex commands. Drivers can also access third-party applications such as Spotify and Waze. Over-the-air software updates are included as well.

Hyundai has retained physical controls beneath the central display for frequently used functions. This gives drivers an alternative to navigating everything through the touchscreen.

2027 Hyundai Tucson Gets More Practical Technology

The hybrid version also introduces Stay Mode. This feature allows the climate control and audio systems to continue operating while the gasoline engine remains switched off.

All powertrain versions receive an integrated electric water pump as part of the updated engineering package. These changes show that Hyundai is focusing on efficiency and everyday usability rather than simply increasing power.

When Will the 2027 Hyundai Tucson Launch?

The gasoline and hybrid versions of the 2027 Hyundai Tucson are scheduled to reach U.S. dealerships in early 2027. The plug-in hybrid is expected to follow, although Hyundai has not yet provided complete details about its U.S. launch.

With a larger body, improved hybrid efficiency, up to 288 hp in the plug-in hybrid and a new Android-based infotainment system, the 2027 Tucson represents a substantial update for Hyundai’s best-selling SUV. The stronger hybrid focus could also make the new Tucson more competitive as buyers increasingly look for fuel-efficient alternatives to conventional gasoline SUVs.
