Tesla Semi Megacharger Opens for Public Truck Charging

Tesla has opened a new Megacharger station designed for its electric Semi trucks, marking an important step in the expansion of charging infrastructure for commercial electric vehicles. The station is located near Los Angeles and represents the first Megacharger site that is not built at a Tesla factory.

The charging facility is situated at a travel center in Ontario, California. Tesla confirmed that the station is now available for customers who have already taken delivery of the Tesla Semi. The company has only delivered a limited number of trucks so far, but the new infrastructure suggests Tesla is preparing for broader deployment.

Megacharger Network Expands for Tesla Semi

The new station becomes the third Megacharger location developed by Tesla. The other two operational sites are located at Tesla facilities, including the Megapack factory in Lathrop, California and the Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada. Another private Megacharger installation also exists at PepsiCo, one of the earliest customers for the Tesla Semi.

Unlike those factory locations, the Ontario site functions as a public charging station specifically for Semi customers. Tesla has also outlined plans to expand the network significantly. The company intends to deploy at least 64 Megacharger stations across the United States in the coming years.

Megachargers provide significantly more power than standard EV charging stations. The new Ontario site delivers up to 750 kilowatts of charging power. Although this is lower than the 1.2 megawatt output available at Tesla’s factory Megacharger stations, it still provides extremely high charging speeds compared with most EV infrastructure.

For comparison, Tesla’s latest Supercharger stations typically provide around 350 kilowatts of charging power, while older units deliver about 150 kilowatts.

Charging Designed for Electric Long Haul Trucks

The Tesla Semi uses a very large battery pack to support long distance freight operations. The electric truck can travel up to 500 miles on a single charge under certain conditions.

Because of the large battery capacity, powerful charging systems are necessary to keep trucks operating efficiently during commercial use. Tesla says its highest power Megachargers can recharge the Semi’s long range battery to about 60 percent in roughly 30 minutes.

Even that level of charging requires significant energy. According to estimates, charging a Tesla Semi to 60 percent uses enough electricity to fast charge several passenger electric vehicles.

Preparing for Larger Production

Tesla first introduced the Semi truck in 2017. However, production has remained limited while the company continued developing the vehicle and supporting infrastructure.

Recent updates suggest Tesla’s dedicated Semi factory is approaching completion. Once production increases, the company will likely expand its Megacharger network to support more electric trucks on the road.

Building a reliable charging network is considered essential for the success of electric commercial vehicles. By expanding Megacharger locations in key transportation corridors, Tesla aims to make long distance electric trucking more practical for logistics companies.

As the company moves closer to large scale production of the Tesla Semi, the development of high power Megacharger stations could play a major role in supporting the next stage of electric freight transportation.
