Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has approved two major development initiatives for the provincial capital — a new general hospital in Peshawar and an electric bus project for the city’s Ring Road — as part of the upcoming Annual Development Program (ADP) 2026–27.
The decision was made during a consultative meeting of parliamentarians from the Peshawar region at Pakhtunkhwa House in Islamabad. Senators, Members of the National Assembly (MNAs), and Members of the Provincial Assembly (MPAs) attended the session, which focused on setting development priorities for the next fiscal year.
New General Hospital to Address Growing Healthcare Needs
The meeting formally approved the establishment of a new general hospital in Peshawar to cater to the city’s rapidly expanding population and rising healthcare demands. The chief minister directed relevant authorities to execute the project on a fast-track basis, emphasizing the urgency of strengthening medical infrastructure in the provincial capital.
Peshawar’s public hospitals have long faced pressure due to patient inflow not only from within the province but also from adjoining tribal districts. The addition of a new general hospital is expected to improve access to essential medical services, reduce overcrowding, and enhance emergency response capacity.
Electric Bus Project for Peshawar Ring Road
In a move aimed at modernizing public transport, the chief minister also approved the inclusion of an electric bus project for the Peshawar Ring Road. The initiative is designed to provide environmentally friendly and efficient mass transit along one of the city’s busiest corridors.
Electric buses are expected to help reduce carbon emissions, lower fuel costs, and improve commuting standards. The Ring Road plays a critical role in diverting heavy traffic away from central Peshawar, and the introduction of electric public transport could significantly ease daily congestion.
Feasibility Study for Second Ring Road
In addition to the bus project, a feasibility study for a second Ring Road was also approved. This long-term infrastructure plan aims to further address traffic bottlenecks caused by urban expansion and increasing vehicle numbers.
Focus on Public-Centric Development
The chief minister instructed parliamentarians to submit constituency-based development proposals to the Chief Minister Secretariat by March 15 for consideration in the ADP 2026–27. He stressed that projects must be prioritized based on public need, development impact, and timely execution.
By integrating healthcare expansion and sustainable transport solutions into the upcoming development program, the provincial government aims to ensure balanced urban growth while improving quality of life for residents of Peshawar.
