In a major step toward improving regional connectivity and promoting sustainable public transport, the Punjab government has announced plans to operate 15 electric buses from Gujar Khan to T-Chowk starting next month. The initiative is part of the provincial government’s broader strategy to expand environmentally friendly transportation while reducing traffic congestion and fuel dependency.
Route Approved by Regional Transport Authority
According to Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Secretary Asad Shirazi, the route from Gujar Khan to T-Chowk has been officially approved. Once operational, the service will provide a reliable and modern transport link connecting Gujar Khan, Rawalpindi, and Islamabad through a dedicated electric bus system.
As per the approved plan, the electric buses will start from Gujar Khan Adda, pass through Mandra, and operate along the G.T. Road before reaching T-Chowk. After completing the route, buses will return to Gujar Khan via the same corridor, ensuring consistent two-way connectivity for daily commuters.
Boost to Intercity and Daily Commuter Travel
The new electric bus service is expected to benefit thousands of passengers who travel daily between Gujar Khan, Rawalpindi, and Islamabad for work, education, and business. With rising fuel costs and increasing private vehicle usage, the introduction of electric buses offers a cost-effective, comfortable, and eco-friendly alternative to traditional transport options.
Officials believe the project will not only reduce travel stress but also help cut down carbon emissions along one of the busiest transport corridors in the region.
Expansion of Electric Bus Network in Rawalpindi
In addition to the Gujar Khan route, the Punjab government is also expanding electric bus services within Rawalpindi city. Asad Shirazi revealed that the number of electric buses in Rawalpindi will increase from 45 to 80 over the next few months.
This expansion will take place following the remodelling of Kutchery Chowk, a major traffic hub. Once the development work is completed, six additional electric bus routes will become operational, significantly improving urban mobility across Rawalpindi.
New Electric Bus Depot on Peshawar Road
To support the growing fleet, construction of a dedicated electric bus depot on Peshawar Road is nearing completion. After the depot becomes operational, authorities plan to induct more buses into the system, ensuring smooth operations, maintenance, and future expansion.
Future Plans and Conclusion
In total, 10 routes have been allocated for electric bus operations, with the remaining six routes scheduled to launch after ongoing road development projects are completed. The initiative reflects the Punjab government’s commitment to modernizing public transport and improving intercity connectivity.
With the launch of the Gujar Khan to Islamabad electric bus service, commuters can look forward to safer, cleaner, and more efficient travel options in the coming months.
