The federal government has given the green light to two major Islamabad road projects aimed at easing traffic congestion in the capital city. The decision was finalized during a meeting chaired by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi at the Capital Development Authority (CDA) headquarters.
According to CDA officials, the groundbreaking ceremonies for both projects—the T Chowk Flyover and the Shaheen Chowk Underpass—are scheduled for the first week of September 2025.
T Chowk Flyover Project
The T Chowk Flyover, with an estimated cost of Rs 1.4 billion, is planned at the busy junction of GT Road and Islamabad Expressway. This corridor experiences heavy traffic throughout the day, especially during rush hours.
The flyover is designed to:
- Ease traffic flow for vehicles entering and leaving Islamabad.
- Reduce congestion at one of the capital’s busiest intersections.
- Improve overall road safety and travel efficiency.
The CDA has already invited bids for the project, which is considered a critical step in managing growing traffic pressure.
Shaheen Chowk Underpass Project
The Shaheen Chowk Underpass, estimated at Rs 1.3 billion, targets one of Islamabad’s most congested areas—Ninth Avenue and Khayaban-i-Iqbal/Margalla Road. This location is surrounded by government offices, residential areas, and educational institutions, making it a major traffic hotspot.
Under the project design:
- Khayanban-i-Iqbal traffic will be routed underground.
- The top of the underpass will connect Ninth Avenue with the adjacent service road, ensuring smoother vehicular movement.
- The project is expected to significantly cut travel delays in the area.
Urban Development in Islamabad
These projects are part of the CDA’s broader mission to modernize Islamabad’s infrastructure and address the city’s rising traffic demands. By prioritizing strategic intersections like T Chowk and Shaheen Chowk, the government aims to create a more efficient, safe, and commuter-friendly road network.
With the launch of the T Chowk Flyover and Shaheen Chowk Underpass, Islamabad is set to witness major improvements in traffic management. Scheduled to begin in September 2025, these projects reflect the government’s commitment to solving long-standing congestion issues and enhancing urban mobility in the capital.
