In a significant move to enhance the country’s transportation infrastructure, the federal government has approved a comprehensive plan to upgrade the historic Grand Trunk (G.T.) Road (N-5) into a uniform three-lane carriageway, aligning it with modern motorway standards. The decision was announced following a high-level meeting chaired by Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan.
The National Highway Authority (NHA) has been directed to begin work on the project, which will be executed in two phases, with the first phase scheduled for completion within the current fiscal year. This development marks a major milestone in Pakistan’s road network transformation, aiming to boost regional connectivity and reduce logistical hurdles.
Stretching from Karachi to Torkham, the G.T. Road is Pakistan’s longest national highway and serves as a vital north-south trade and travel artery. Its strategic importance cannot be overstated, facilitating daily transportation for thousands of vehicles and supporting both domestic and international commerce.
The meeting included senior officials from the Ministry of Communications, Economic Affairs Division, and Planning Department, who presented detailed proposals for the road’s restoration and expansion. Their recommendations focused on ensuring cost-effective solutions and minimizing financial burdens on the national exchequer.
Minister Abdul Aleem Khan emphasized a district-wise upgrade strategy to better manage local traffic challenges and prevent bottlenecks. He highlighted the need for regular inspections and financial discipline, criticizing past infrastructure projects that failed due to poor planning and lack of oversight.
“This time, our goal is to deliver a high-quality, transparent, and economically viable project that serves the public effectively,” Khan stated. He assured the public that strict monitoring mechanisms will be in place to avoid delays and cost overruns.
This upgrade of the G.T. Road is expected to significantly enhance safety, reduce travel time, and support economic activity across Pakistan—bringing the country’s oldest highway closer to modern-day standards.
