Have you ever imagined a bicycle that runs on nothing but water? The H200 hydrogen-powered bicycle makes this a reality. Developed by Chengdu Hydrogen Collection, this innovative bike requires only 20 grams of hydrogen to travel dozens of kilometers, with a hydrogen bottle replacement taking just one minute. Designed for various settings such as parks, campuses, tourist attractions, and urban sharing, this breakthrough could redefine eco-friendly transportation.
On March 26, the China International Hydrogen Congress 2025 commenced in Beijing, bringing together leaders in hydrogen technology from around the world. The three-day event, covering 40,000 square meters, hosted 447 hydrogen and fuel cell companies from 14 countries and regions. With over 1,000 new technologies and products on display, including contributions from 51 international exhibitors, the congress highlighted China’s growing influence in hydrogen innovation.
A French visitor at the event praised China’s efforts, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in hydrogen technology. One fascinating exhibit at the event was the “hydrogen strawberry,” showcased at Air Liquide (China) Holding’s booth, representing a successful collaboration between China and France.
Beyond transportation, hydrogen technology is making strides in agriculture. Research has shown that irrigating crops with hydrogen-rich water can enhance the growth and quality of plants. Hydrogen-rich water, produced using a specialized hydrogen water processor, positively impacts the microbial community in the soil, improving yield and resistance to disease.
The benefits are particularly evident in strawberries. While initial effects were minimal, by the fourth year, strawberries irrigated with hydrogen-rich water showed significant improvements in root and stem strength. Their yield in greenhouses increased from the typical 3,000 kilograms to as much as 4,000 kilograms. Other crops, such as tomatoes, blueberries, and rice, have also benefited, with hydrogen-rich water significantly enhancing rice’s resistance to rice blast and boosting yield by 17%.
The global hydrogen market is expanding rapidly, with buyers from Germany, France, Britain, Switzerland, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Russia, Singapore, and India actively seeking new technologies. European buyers, in particular, have shown strong interest in China’s advanced alkaline electrolyzers and fuel cell stacks, viewing them as ideal solutions for green hydrogen projects and energy storage.
According to official data, the global hydrogen market reached $120.6 billion in 2024. However, green hydrogen production remains low, contributing less than 1 million tons, or under 2% of total production. Despite this, the demand for hydrogen is immense, reaching 97 million tons, with fossil fuel-based hydrogen still dominating the market. As a leading hydrogen producer, China’s annual output surpassed 35 million tons in 2022, positioning the country as a key player in future hydrogen supply.
The advancements showcased at the China International Hydrogen Congress 2025 highlight the vast potential of hydrogen technology. From hydrogen-powered bicycles to agricultural innovations and large-scale energy solutions, the possibilities are endless. As countries collaborate to expand green hydrogen production, the world moves closer to a sustainable energy future.
