In a decisive move to combat environmental degradation, the Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed the installation of water recycling plants at service stations across Punjab. The order, issued by Justice Shahid Karim, aims to reduce water wastage and mitigate the impact of pollution on the region’s already fragile ecosystem.
The directive came during a hearing on petitions focused on smog control and environmental protection. Justice Karim instructed all deputy commissioners in the province to ensure immediate and strict implementation of the court’s orders. The decision is part of a broader strategy to promote sustainable water use and reduce the strain on freshwater resources, which are under increasing pressure due to population growth and industrial activity.
During the proceedings, a report was presented on the status of a water treatment plant in Kasur, revealing its non-operational status. Justice Karim expressed grave concern over its closure, pointing out that the lack of clean water has contributed to a rise in waterborne diseases among children and adults in the region. He emphasized the urgent need to restore the Kasur facility to ensure access to safe drinking water.
In a positive development, the court also took note of an initiative by the Central Business District (CBD), which has constructed a rainwater harvesting tank. This stored rainwater will now be repurposed for road cleaning and irrigation, reducing reliance on freshwater. Justice Karim praised the CBD’s proactive approach, describing it as a step in the right direction for urban sustainability.
Separately, the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) reported active enforcement actions against crop residue burning along the motorway. Offenders are being fined as part of efforts to reduce smog and air pollution, particularly during the critical winter season.
The court has requested updated reports from relevant departments and adjourned the hearing until next Friday, continuing its oversight of environmental reforms in the province.
