By One of Punjab’s most significant infrastructure developments, the Rawalpindi Ring Road, is expected to open to traffic in July 2026 as construction enters its final phase. The Rs. 47 billion project is nearing completion, with authorities carrying out finishing work before formally handing over the highway to the Punjab government for inauguration.

Final Touches Underway Before Opening
According to project officials, major construction work has already been completed, and teams are currently focused on landscaping, lane markings, fencing, drainage systems, road lighting, and the installation of directional signboards.
Once these final tasks are completed, the project will be ready for operational testing and official inauguration.
The Rawalpindi Ring Road spans approximately 38.3 kilometers and connects Baanth on the historic GT Road to Thalian near the motorway network, providing an alternative route for commuters and freight transport.
Route and Interchanges
The new highway includes five strategically located interchanges designed to improve connectivity and facilitate smooth traffic movement.
The interchanges are located at:

- Maira Mohra
- Khasala
- Kolian Parr
- Thalian
These access points will connect surrounding residential, commercial, and industrial areas to the new road network, reducing travel times across the region.
Speed Limit and Toll Collection System
Officials have confirmed that the maximum speed limit on the Ring Road will be 120 kilometers per hour, making it one of the fastest urban highway corridors in Punjab.
A modern toll collection system, similar to the one used on Lahore Ring Road, will also be implemented to support maintenance and operational costs. Authorities expect more than 30,000 vehicles to use the route daily after its opening.
Major Relief for Rawalpindi and Islamabad Traffic
Traffic experts believe the Rawalpindi Ring Road will significantly ease congestion on existing roads by diverting a large portion of both passenger and freight traffic.
According to project estimates:
- 25 to 30 percent of general traffic will shift to the Ring Road.
- Around 70 percent of heavy goods transport will be diverted from existing urban routes.
This reduction in traffic volume is expected to improve travel times, lower fuel consumption, and reduce environmental pollution caused by congestion in the twin cities.
