The Balochistan government has decided to move forward with a major Quetta BRT Project, aiming to introduce a modern Bus Rapid Transit system in the provincial capital and provide residents with a more efficient, reliable and organized public transportation network.
According to Transport Department officials, five foreign companies have expressed interest in conducting the feasibility study for the proposed project. The government is expected to select one of these companies to undertake the study, after which practical work on the mass transit project will proceed based on its recommendations.
The proposed Quetta BRT system is expected to require an investment of more than Rs. 300 billion, while authorities have set 2032 as the target for completion. However, the project’s final scope, route alignment, infrastructure requirements and overall cost are expected to become clearer once the feasibility study is completed.
Feasibility Study to Determine Project Details
The feasibility study will be an important first step before construction begins. It is expected to assess passenger demand, potential routes, traffic conditions, infrastructure requirements, project costs and other technical considerations.
This approach is consistent with how major mass transit systems have been developed elsewhere in Pakistan. For example, the Punjab Mass Transit Authority notes that a transport modelling and feasibility study was conducted before the development of the Multan Metro Bus corridor. The resulting system includes dedicated infrastructure, stations, automated fare collection, vehicle location systems and passenger information services.
For Quetta, the feasibility study could similarly determine how dedicated bus corridors, stations, pedestrian facilities, ticketing systems and fleet operations should be integrated into the city’s existing transport network.
Quetta Joins Pakistan’s Growing BRT Network
If implemented, Quetta will become another major Pakistani city to pursue a dedicated mass transit system. Lahore, Rawalpindi-Islamabad and Multan already have established Metrobus systems. The Punjab Mass Transit Authority lists Lahore’s 27-kilometre Metrobus route, the 24-kilometre Rawalpindi-Islamabad system and Multan’s 18.5-kilometre Metrobus corridor among the province’s operational mass transit services.
Peshawar has also developed a major BRT network, while Karachi has been pursuing BRT-based mass transit as part of its broader urban transportation strategy. The Sindh Transport Department describes its approach as an integrated mass transit system involving infrastructure, bus operations, automated fare collection, fleet management and command-and-control facilities.
The expansion of such systems reflects the increasing need for structured public transport in Pakistan’s growing urban centres.
Potential Benefits for Quetta
A properly designed BRT system could provide several benefits for Quetta. Dedicated bus lanes can help public transport avoid some of the delays experienced by conventional buses operating in mixed traffic. Modern stations and scheduled services could also make journeys more predictable for commuters.
The project could additionally encourage greater use of public transportation, potentially reducing dependence on private cars and motorcycles. Better public transport can help improve urban mobility while supporting economic activity by making it easier for workers, students and other residents to travel across the city.
The experience of other Pakistani cities demonstrates the potential of mass transit infrastructure. Punjab’s official mass transit authority describes its objective as providing safe, efficient and comfortable urban transportation through modern mass transit systems.
Rs. 300 Billion Investment Highlights Scale of Project
The estimated cost of more than Rs. 300 billion makes the proposed Quetta BRT one of the most significant urban transportation investments planned for Balochistan. The figure also highlights the scale of infrastructure required to develop a modern BRT network, including dedicated corridors, stations, buses, depots, intelligent transport systems and supporting infrastructure.
The provincial government will need to carefully evaluate the project’s financing, operating model and long-term maintenance requirements. These issues are particularly important because the sustainability of a mass transit system depends not only on constructing infrastructure but also on maintaining reliable operations after launch.
Completion Target Set for 2032
The Balochistan government expects the Quetta BRT Project to be completed by 2032. The immediate priority, however, is the selection of a foreign company to conduct the feasibility study.
Once the study is completed and its recommendations reviewed, the government is expected to move toward practical implementation. The eventual route, number of stations, fleet size, construction phases and financing structure will therefore depend on the findings of the feasibility process.
For Quetta residents, the proposed project represents a potentially major shift from conventional urban transport toward a planned mass transit network.
