By The Punjab government has unveiled an ambitious plan to transform the province’s transportation network by adding 2,000 electric buses to the public transport fleet during the next fiscal year. The initiative forms part of a broader transport development strategy valued at more than Rs 200 billion, aimed at modernizing public transit, reducing environmental pollution, and improving mobility for millions of citizens.
According to proposals prepared by the Transport Department, the upcoming fiscal year’s transport portfolio includes several major infrastructure and mobility projects designed to provide faster, safer, and environmentally friendly travel options throughout Punjab.
2,000 Electric Buses to Strengthen Public Transport
A key component of the proposed plan is the induction of 2,000 electric buses across multiple cities. The expansion is expected to significantly improve urban transportation while reducing dependence on conventional fuel-powered vehicles.

50,000 Electric Bikes for Students
The government is also planning to distribute 50,000 electric bikes to students across Punjab. The initiative aims to make education more accessible by providing affordable and eco-friendly transportation options for young people.
Officials believe the scheme will help reduce commuting costs for students while encouraging the adoption of electric mobility technologies throughout the province.
5,000 E-Taxis to Create Employment Opportunities
Another significant proposal is the launch of 5,000 electric taxis for unemployed youth. The initiative is designed to create income-generating opportunities while simultaneously promoting cleaner transportation solutions.
The e-taxi program is expected to support entrepreneurship, reduce unemployment, and contribute to the province’s environmental sustainability goals.
Modern Transit Systems Planned for Major Cities
Lahore’s transportation network is also set for a major upgrade. Under the proposed plan, the Automated Rapid Transit (ART) system will become operational between Kalma Chowk and Istanbul Chowk, providing a modern and efficient urban transit solution.
Furthermore, similar public transport systems are under consideration for Gujranwala and Faisalabad, reflecting the government’s commitment to expanding modern transportation infrastructure beyond Lahore.
