By Karachi is set to witness a significant improvement in its traffic infrastructure as Mayor Murtaza Wahab has officially announced the completion of the Munawar Chowrangi Underpass. The much-awaited project will be opened to the public on Sunday, offering relief to commuters navigating one of the city’s busiest intersections.
The mayor shared the update via his official statement on X (formerly Twitter), confirming that while the underpass is ready for traffic, additional beautification work will continue. This includes tiling and finishing of the side walls, ensuring that the infrastructure not only serves its functional purpose but also enhances the city’s urban aesthetics.
Ongoing Work to Continue After Opening
Despite the opening, development around the underpass will not stop. Mayor Wahab highlighted that construction of slip roads and service lanes will commence after the underpass becomes operational. These additions are expected to further streamline traffic flow and improve connectivity in the surrounding areas.
The phased approach ensures that commuters can begin benefiting from the underpass immediately, even as supporting infrastructure is completed in parallel.
A Key Project to Ease Traffic Congestion
The Munawar Chowrangi Underpass is part of a larger infrastructure initiative worth Rs. 2.02 billion, launched in 2023. The primary objective of the project is to reduce severe traffic congestion in a high-density area of Karachi that has long been a bottleneck for daily commuters.

Background and Delays in Completion
The announcement comes after months of delays that affected both commuters and local businesses. Earlier this year, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah had directed the Karachi administration to expedite work on both the Munawar Chowrangi and Karimabad underpasses.
In February, the chief minister instructed Mayor Wahab to complete both projects within a month and make them operational. The directive followed a review of the slow progress that had led to public frustration.
Karimabad Underpass Still Pending
While the Munawar Chowrangi Underpass is now complete, the Karimabad Underpass—launched in May 2023—continues to face delays. Initially scheduled for completion within 10 months and expected to open by October 2024, the project encountered technical challenges that pushed back its timeline.
These delays have caused inconvenience for commuters and negatively impacted nearby businesses, increasing pressure on authorities to ensure timely completion.
