In response to Lahore’s worsening air quality, the Punjab government has enforced a strict ban on heavy vehicle entry into the city for three days a week, from Friday to Sunday. This measure aims to combat the escalating smog crisis, improve air quality, and reduce pollution.
The restriction, announced by Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Amara Athar, targets heavy vehicles, including loader trolleys and large trucks, prohibiting their entry into Lahore during the specified days. Additionally, vehicles emitting excessive smoke or lacking valid fitness certificates are also barred from entering the city.
Exemptions have been granted for buses, passenger vehicles, and trucks carrying essential goods such as food and medicine.
To ensure compliance, law enforcement officers, under the supervision of Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs), are stationed at 12 key entry and exit points around Lahore. These checkpoints aim to enforce the ban and minimize unauthorized vehicle access during the restriction period.
CTO Amara Athar highlighted the importance of collaboration between authorities and the public to effectively tackle Lahore’s smog problem. “We must work together to eradicate smog and enhance the quality of life for the people of Lahore,” Athar stated, urging truckers to cooperate with the restrictions.
Complementing the vehicle ban, Lahore Traffic Police have launched an aggressive crackdown on vehicles that contribute to pollution. Thousands of non-compliant vehicles have been fined or impounded for violating smog regulations. To intensify efforts, 41 anti-smog squads have been deployed across the city to inspect and penalize polluting vehicles.
The Punjab government’s initiatives reflect a strong commitment to addressing Lahore’s smog crisis. By enforcing stricter regulations on vehicle emissions and limiting heavy vehicle traffic, the administration aims to protect public health and create a cleaner, more sustainable environment for Lahore’s residents.
