The highly anticipated Jinnah Square Murree Road Underpass is slated for inauguration this Friday by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, marking a significant milestone in Islamabad’s urban infrastructure development. As final touches are being made, including horticulture and beautification, city officials and the Capital Development Authority (CDA) are gearing up to unveil a project aimed at reducing congestion and enhancing urban mobility.
The underpass, which connects Srinagar Highway to Murree Road, has been structurally completed, according to a recent CDA press release. Landscaping efforts such as tree plantations and an urban forest are being implemented alongside the project, showcasing a sustainable vision for city development. The urban forest is particularly noteworthy for its potential to combat environmental pollution and contribute to Islamabad’s greener future.
CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa has instructed that all remaining work be completed before the inauguration. He emphasized the importance of aligning infrastructure projects with environmental sustainability and aesthetic appeal.
The underpass is part of a broader citywide initiative to tackle traffic congestion and modernize Islamabad’s infrastructure. Officials confirmed that traffic bottlenecks at 11 of the city’s 20 most congested points have already been resolved, with work actively progressing at the remaining nine locations. This effort is expected to significantly improve traffic flow across the capital.
In parallel, the CDA is undertaking a beautification and renovation campaign across major roadways. This includes the installation of LED and decorative lighting, new kerb stones, and fresh paintwork to uplift the city’s visual landscape. Upcoming projects include the Shaheen Chowk Underpass and extensive tree plantation and modern lighting installations across major roads such as Margalla Road, Faisal Avenue, Murree Road, and the Diplomatic Enclave.
The Jinnah Square Underpass is more than just a roadway—it represents Islamabad’s move toward smart urban planning, environmental responsibility, and commuter-friendly infrastructure. With Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the helm of its inauguration, the project is expected to serve as a blueprint for future development across Pakistan’s urban centers.
