Hyundai’s Metal-Coated Heated Glass: Revolutionizing Windscreen Technology for EVs

Hyundai is set to introduce a groundbreaking technology that will change the way we experience driving in extreme weather conditions. The automaker is developing an innovative windscreen system called “Metal-Coated Heated Glass,” which promises to defrost and demist windscreens faster and more efficiently, especially in freezing temperatures.

This advanced 48-volt system is designed to outperform the traditional 13.5-volt heated systems, which often take over 15 minutes to fully defrost or clear fog in cold conditions. Hyundai’s new technology, in contrast, can achieve these results in under five minutes, significantly improving driving safety and comfort during winter months.

One of the key features of this new technology is its unique construction. The metal-coated windscreen includes 20 layers, one of which is the metal coating itself. This advanced system is powered by the 800-volt architecture found in Hyundai’s all-electric Genesis GV70 and GV60 models, enabling rapid defrosting and fog removal even in temperatures as low as -18°C.

Beyond its winter benefits, the metal coating also helps in warmer weather. The coating reflects 60% of solar energy, which prevents excessive heating inside the vehicle. This cooling effect reduces the cabin temperature by 2-3°C, easing the need for air-conditioning and conserving valuable energy. As a result, Hyundai’s system consumes 10% less power than traditional air-conditioning systems, thereby extending the range of electric vehicles (EVs) and improving energy efficiency.

Although Hyundai and its luxury brand Genesis have not confirmed which specific models will feature the Metal-Coated Heated Glass system, it represents a significant leap forward for electric vehicles. It not only promises to enhance comfort by making driving in extreme conditions easier but also supports the global push for cleaner, more sustainable driving experiences.

As the automotive world eagerly anticipates the official debut of this technology, Hyundai is one step closer to redefining comfort and efficiency for the electric vehicle market.
