Restrictions Imposed In Lahore on high-emission vehicles due to smog

Heavy Vehicles Have Now Been Included in EPA Testing

In a decisive move to combat Lahore’s worsening air pollution, the Punjab Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced an expansion of its free vehicle emission testing campaign to now include heavy vehicles. This development comes amid growing concerns over Lahore’s deteriorating air quality, with studies revealing that over 83% of the city’s hazardous winter smog originates from vehicle exhaust emissions.

Campaign Extended to Heavy Vehicles

The EPA’s free emission testing campaign, which began in May 2025, initially focused on motorcycles and cars. So far, over 158,000 vehicles have been tested in Lahore, with only 4,100 vehicles failing to meet the prescribed emission standards — an encouraging sign, but still not enough to tackle the city’s severe pollution problem.

In a significant update, the EPA has now included heavy vehicles — such as trucks and buses — in its free testing drive. This expansion targets vehicles operating without a valid Vehicle Inspection and Certification System (VICS) certificate. Owners of non-compliant heavy vehicles will be given a one-week grace period to undergo testing and meet emission standards.

Free Testing Deadline Extended

To make it easier for vehicle owners to benefit from this initiative, the Punjab EPA has extended the free testing deadline to August 31, 2025. After this date, all vehicle emissions tests will become chargeable, so citizens are encouraged to get their vehicles checked as soon as possible.

Streamlined Testing Process

Responding to public feedback, the EPA has streamlined the emission testing setup to improve efficiency and reduce congestion at testing sites. The number of booths has been adjusted from 26 to 20, resolving space management issues. Each booth now has a dedicated three-member team equipped with three testing devices, ensuring quicker turnaround times for vehicle owners.

The agency is also planning to extend testing hours in the coming weeks to accommodate the expected influx of heavy vehicles and to ensure that no vehicle goes unchecked.

Long-Term Strategy for Cleaner Air

The EPA’s current campaign is part of a broader strategy to address Punjab’s chronic air pollution. Lahore, in particular, faces an annual battle with toxic smog, which poses severe health risks to residents, especially during the winter months. With vehicle emissions identified as the primary culprit, the agency’s focus on stricter checks and certifications is an urgent step towards sustainable pollution control.

Officials emphasize that regular vehicle maintenance and adherence to emission standards are crucial for all vehicle owners. The EPA is also considering new policies and technological upgrades to further tighten vehicle emission controls in the future.

A Collective Effort for a Healthier Lahore

By expanding free emission testing to heavy vehicles and extending the testing deadline, the Punjab EPA has signaled its commitment to tackling the city’s smog crisis head-on. Citizens are urged to take advantage of this free service, contribute to cleaner air, and help make Lahore a healthier place for everyone.
