The Punjab Transport Department is making major strides in public transportation with the expansion of the Gujranwala Metro Bus project. In a recent development, the metro route has been extended from Aimenabad Mor to Gakhar Mandi, with a feasibility report underway for a further extension to Kamoke — a move that could significantly enhance regional connectivity.

This announcement was made during a high-level meeting led by Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar, held to assess the operational readiness of the metro bus service in Gujranwala. Senior officials, including Transport Secretary Imran Sikandar Baloch and Gujranwala Commissioner Naveed Haider Sheerazi, were also present.

A Game-Changer for Gujranwala’s Urban Mobility

Minister Bilal Akbar emphasized the importance of this project, citing Gujranwala’s status as a key industrial and commercial hub in Punjab. With a rapidly growing population and increasing transportation demands, the metro bus system aims to provide a safe, efficient, and affordable transit solution. The initiative was approved by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, who has made urban infrastructure a core focus of her administration.

Project Highlights and Infrastructure Development

  • 1,009 buses will be deployed across main and feeder routes to serve commuters more effectively.
  • Four depots for bus parking are planned along GT Road, with sites already selected.
  • Proposals include widening GT Road, constructing flyovers, and possibly introducing underground bus stations to ensure smooth traffic flow and modern infrastructure.
  • Feeder bus service between Lahore and Gujranwala is also under consideration, providing inter-city connectivity for daily commuters.

Completion Timeline

The metro bus project is expected to be completed within a year, signaling a swift and dedicated approach by the Punjab government. Once operational, it is poised to revolutionize public transport in the region, reduce travel time, lower traffic congestion, and promote eco-friendly transit.

The extension of the Gujranwala Metro Bus route and its proposed reach to Kamoke reflect the Punjab government’s proactive urban planning strategy. With infrastructure improvements, efficient connectivity, and an emphasis on commuter convenience, this project has the potential to set a new standard for public transport across the province.
