The Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) has taken a significant step toward enhancing the tourist experience at Lahore Fort by launching an electric cart service, sponsored by the Punjab Tourism and Economic Growth Programme (PTEGP). This initiative aims to provide a comfortable and accessible mode of transportation for visitors, particularly benefiting elderly tourists, children, and those with mobility challenges.

Launch and Deployment of E-Carts

The WCLA has introduced 15 electric carts as part of this initiative, with 10 carts dedicated to Lahore Fort and the remaining 5 deployed at Shalimar Gardens and Jahangir’s Tomb. These carts are designed to shuttle tourists across 12 strategically placed stations within the Lahore Fort, ensuring that visitors can easily access and explore the site’s rich historical monuments.

Key Features of the E-Cart Service

The electric carts offer a seamless and enjoyable touring experience, with a route that passes through iconic landmarks such as Akbari Gate, Alamgiri Gate, Shahi Hammam, Picture Wall, Ahata-e-Jahangiri, Deewan-e-Aam, Makatib Khana, and Huzoori Bagh. The service can be accessed easily via a simple phone call or by visiting the booking booth at Lahore Fort. Three main pick-up points have been established at Roshnai Gate, Gurdwara Dera Sahib, and Picture Wall to facilitate easy boarding.

Affordable and Convenient

The E-cart service is priced at an affordable 100 rupees per person, offering nearly an hour-long tour of Lahore Fort. Tourists also benefit from the “hop on and hop off” feature, allowing them to explore different stations at their own pace before re-boarding the cart. This flexibility makes the service both convenient and accommodating to the varying needs of visitors.

Positive Reception and Increased Tourism

According to Tania Qureshi, Director of Media and Marketing at WCLA, the initiative has been well-received by tourists. “This initiative provides tourists with an easy and accessible way to explore heritage sites. People coming to Lahore Fort have expressed positive opinions on this project,” she stated. On average, around 200 visitors, including children, women, and elderly citizens, use the E-cart service daily. Since the launch, there has been a noticeable increase in tourist numbers at Lahore Fort, highlighting the effectiveness of WCLA’s efforts to promote tourism and make heritage sites more accessible.

A Commitment to Enhancing Tourism

Director General of WCLA, Kamran Lashari, emphasized the authority’s dedication to improving the tourist experience at Lahore’s heritage sites. “Our efforts are focused on introducing diverse strategies to attract tourists, making visits to heritage sites both more accessible and enjoyable for all. Understanding the challenges that elderly visitors and children might face in covering long distances, we’ve implemented E-carts specifically designed to assist them,” Lashari said. He also noted that the services are offered at subsidized rates, ensuring that all visitors can enjoy a convenient and enriching tour of Lahore Fort.

The introduction of the electric cart service at Lahore Fort marks a significant advancement in making historical sites more accessible and enjoyable for all visitors. By combining convenience with an affordable price, the Walled City of Lahore Authority is not only preserving the cultural heritage of Lahore but also ensuring that it remains accessible to future generations. This initiative stands as a testament to the WCLA’s commitment to enhancing tourism and making the exploration of Lahore’s rich history a pleasant and memorable experience for everyone.
