In a groundbreaking effort to reduce air pollution in Lahore, the Punjab Transport Department has launched a major initiative to convert old petrol motorcycles into environmentally friendly electric bikes. This project is a part of the government’s broader efforts to improve air quality, promote sustainable transport, and reduce carbon emissions in one of Pakistan’s most polluted cities.

Details of the Electric Bike Conversion Project

Transport Secretary Ahmed Javed Qazi announced that the Punjab government would shoulder half of the conversion costs for motorcycle owners, making the shift to electric bikes more affordable. This initiative will replace traditional petrol engines with battery-powered systems, drastically reducing harmful emissions that contribute to Lahore’s notorious air pollution problem.

A successful trial conversion has already been conducted, with several old petrol bikes successfully upgraded to electric models. After further testing, which is being carried out by the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), the project is set to officially launch.

The conversion process is expected to commence between October and January, with a targeted goal of converting a significant number of petrol bikes into battery-powered systems. The initiative aims to replace petrol engines, thus decreasing emissions and improving air quality, which is essential for Lahore’s residents, who frequently face hazardous air pollution levels.

The Role of the Punjab Clean Air Program and World Bank

The project is part of the Punjab Clean Air Program, which is being supported by the World Bank. This collaboration strengthens the initiative by providing the necessary resources and expertise to ensure its success. The conversion of motorcycles to electric models aligns with the global push for cleaner transportation solutions and supports Pakistan’s climate goals.

This effort is aimed at providing affordable, sustainable transportation options to students, enabling them to commute more easily while reducing their carbon footprint. All female students who apply for the scheme will be eligible to receive an electric bike, ensuring equal access to this eco-friendly mode of transport.
