Chinese battery leader Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL) has introduced a revolutionary electric vehicle (EV) battery that could dramatically reshape the future of transportation. The newly unveiled Shenxing battery sets a new industry benchmark by achieving ultra-fast charging speeds that rival traditional refuelling times.
Ultra-Fast Charging in Minutes, Not Hours
The Shenxing battery is built using lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) chemistry and can charge from 10% to 98% in just six minutes and 27 seconds. Even more impressive, it can reach 80% charge in under four minutes and achieve 35% in less than a minute. These figures significantly surpass previous milestones, including those achieved by BYD, which earlier set a nine-minute full-charge benchmark.
This level of performance directly addresses one of the biggest concerns among EV buyers: long charging times. With such rapid charging capability, electric vehicles could soon offer convenience comparable to petrol-powered cars, eliminating range anxiety for many users.
Engineered for Extreme Conditions
CATL has also focused on reliability in harsh environments. The Shenxing battery maintains consistent performance even in extreme cold. In tests conducted at temperatures as low as -30°C, the battery was still able to charge from 10% to 98% in approximately nine minutes.
This advancement is particularly important for regions with cold climates, where battery efficiency and charging speed often decline. By ensuring stable performance in such conditions, CATL is expanding the practical usability of EVs worldwide.
The Technology Behind the Breakthrough
According to CATL CEO Robin Zeng, the key to this innovation lies in dramatically reducing internal electrical resistance to just 0.25 milliohms—the lowest ever achieved in a commercial battery. This reduction allows faster energy flow, enabling rapid charging without compromising safety or efficiency.
Impact on the Future of Mobility
The Shenxing battery represents a major step toward mainstream EV adoption. Faster charging times bring EV convenience closer to that of traditional fuel vehicles, removing a critical barrier for consumers.
As global markets push toward cleaner transportation, breakthroughs like this could accelerate the transition to electric mobility. With companies like CATL leading innovation, the future of EVs looks not just sustainable—but also significantly more practical for everyday drivers.
