General Motors is introducing a new charging platform designed to make public EV charging easier and more convenient for drivers across the United States. The company plans to combine access to several major charging providers into one system while also expanding support for Tesla style charging hardware in future electric models.
The update reflects growing efforts by automakers to simplify charging experiences as EV ownership continues to expand.
One platform connects multiple charging networks
The new system allows GM electric vehicle owners to access different charging providers through a single mobile account. Instead of downloading separate applications for every charging company, drivers can manage sessions directly through official GM smartphone apps.
At launch, the platform supports:
- Tesla Supercharger stations
- Electrify America locations
- Ionna charging sites
Additional charging networks are expected to join later.
Drivers can use the app to:
- Start and stop charging sessions
- Track charging progress in real time
- Access payment history and receipts
- View compatible charging locations
The system aims to reduce confusion for drivers who regularly travel between different charging networks.
Plug and Charge support improves convenience
GM is also expanding support for Plug and Charge technology. This feature automatically handles payment and authentication when a vehicle connects to a compatible charger.
With Plug and Charge, drivers no longer need to open apps or interact with payment screens during every charging stop.
The company plans to extend this feature across more charging providers over time, including support for Tesla charging stations on future vehicles equipped with native NACS ports.
Future GM EVs will adopt NACS charging standard
General Motors confirmed that all upcoming 2027 electric models will include the North American Charging Standard charging connector directly from the factory.
This charging system, originally developed by Tesla, is becoming increasingly common across the EV industry in North America.
Benefits of the NACS transition include:
- Access to more charging stations
- Smaller and lighter connector design
- Faster expansion of compatible infrastructure
Some newer GM electric vehicles already include the updated charging port, while the full transition will continue over the next few years.

EV charging remains a major industry focus
As more drivers switch to electric vehicles, charging convenience has become one of the most important factors influencing ownership satisfaction.
Many EV owners currently rely on multiple apps, memberships, and payment systems when traveling long distances. Automakers and charging providers are now working to streamline this process through better integration and standardized systems.
GM’s latest move highlights how software integration and charging compatibility are becoming just as important as battery range and vehicle performance.
By reducing complexity and improving access to public charging, automakers hope to make electric vehicles easier to use for both existing owners and first time buyers.
