By In a major push to improve urban infrastructure and public services, the Sindh government has approved a development package worth approximately Rs20.19 billion for Karachi. The initiative includes extensive investments in road rehabilitation, traffic management, water supply networks, drainage systems, and renewable-energy-based public infrastructure.
The approval was granted during a Sindh Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah at the Chief Minister House. The meeting was attended by provincial ministers, advisers, senior officials, and bureaucrats who reviewed a range of projects aimed at addressing Karachi’s long-standing infrastructure challenges.
Rs11.2 Billion Allocated for Karachi Mega Project
A significant portion of the funding has been earmarked under the Karachi Mega Project. The provincial cabinet approved 11 non-Annual Development Programme (ADP) schemes with an estimated cost of Rs11.198 billion.
The approved projects focus on upgrading key transport corridors and road networks across the city to improve connectivity and reduce traffic congestion. Major roads included in the rehabilitation plan are:
- Haji Ibrahim Essa Road
- Haji Camp Road
- Korangi Link Road
- Marine Drive connecting roads in Clifton
- Mehran Road
- Pajero Road in Scheme-33
- Korangi Creek Airbase Road
- Extension of Jinnah Avenue in Gulzar-e-Hijri
These infrastructure improvements are expected to enhance mobility for commuters and facilitate smoother transportation across several densely populated areas of Karachi.
New Roads and Bridges to Ease Traffic Congestion
To improve transportation links in western Karachi, the cabinet approved the Baldia Stadium Road project, which will connect Shahrah-e-Orangi with Hub River Road.
In another significant move to address traffic bottlenecks, the Sindh government approved the construction of two major bridges at Power House Chowrangi in North Karachi and 4-K Chowrangi in Surjani Town. Officials believe these projects will significantly reduce travel times and improve traffic flow in some of the city’s busiest districts.
With Karachi’s population continuing to grow rapidly, traffic congestion has become one of the city’s most pressing challenges. The newly approved projects are expected to provide long-term relief for commuters and businesses alike.
Rs8.8 Billion for Water Supply and Drainage Improvements
Recognizing the city’s persistent water and drainage issues, the cabinet approved Rs8.824 billion in additional funding for 16 water supply and drainage schemes under the Annual Development Programme (ADP) for FY2025-26.
The investment aims to strengthen Karachi’s water distribution system, improve access to clean water, and modernize drainage infrastructure. These upgrades are particularly important as the city regularly faces urban flooding and drainage problems during the monsoon season.
Authorities expect the projects to improve water availability in several underserved areas while reducing flood risks in vulnerable neighborhoods.
Solar Street Lights Approved for Shahrah-e-Bhutto
The Sindh Cabinet also approved Rs171.205 million for the installation of light poles and solar-powered street lights along the 4.5-kilometre elevated section of Shahrah-e-Bhutto passing through Sammo Goth.
The project aims to improve road safety, enhance nighttime visibility, and promote environmentally friendly urban infrastructure through the use of renewable energy solutions.
Karachi Infrastructure Development Gains Momentum
The combined value of the approved projects exceeds Rs20 billion, making it one of the most significant infrastructure packages announced for Karachi in recent years. Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah directed all relevant departments to ensure timely execution of the schemes and completion of financial formalities within the current fiscal year.
As Pakistan’s largest city and economic hub, Karachi continues to face mounting pressure from rapid urbanization, traffic congestion, water shortages, and aging infrastructure.
