In a significant step toward improving public transportation and easing traffic congestion, Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon chaired an important meeting of the Sindh Mass Transit Authority board where several key decisions were approved for Karachi, Hyderabad, and Sukkur.
The meeting focused on long-term urban mobility reforms aimed at modernizing Sindh’s transport infrastructure, improving traffic management, and introducing environmentally friendly public transport solutions across the province.
Heavy Vehicle Terminal Approved on Northern Bypass
One of the most notable decisions taken during the meeting was the approval of a modern heavy vehicle terminal outside Karachi on the Northern Bypass. The terminal will accommodate trucks, trailers, and other heavy transport vehicles that currently contribute heavily to traffic congestion within the city.
The Sindh government also approved the construction of a dedicated heavy vehicle track connecting Karachi Port directly to the Northern Bypass. This separate corridor is expected to divert heavy traffic away from Karachi’s busy roads, improving traffic flow for commuters and reducing travel delays in key commercial areas.
Officials believe the initiative will significantly enhance road safety, streamline cargo transportation, and reduce pressure on Karachi’s already overburdened urban road network.
500 Electric Buses to Transform Public Transport
As part of Sindh’s push toward sustainable and modern transportation, the board also approved the procurement of 500 electric buses under a public-private partnership model.
According to the approved plan, 450 electric buses will operate on 25 different routes across Karachi, while 50 buses will serve five routes in Hyderabad. The introduction of electric buses is expected to improve the quality of public transport while also reducing fuel consumption and environmental pollution.
The move reflects the Sindh government’s broader strategy to encourage eco-friendly transportation and modernize urban commuting systems in major cities.
Modern EV Depots Planned Across Sindh
To support the expanding electric bus network, the Sindh Mass Transit Authority also approved the establishment of five modern EV depots across Sindh. Four depots will be developed in Karachi, while one depot will be established in Hyderabad.
These depots will provide charging, maintenance, and operational support for the electric bus fleet, ensuring smooth and efficient transport services for daily commuters.
Boost for Karachi’s Traffic Management and Economy
Speaking during the meeting, Sharjeel Inam Memon said the initiatives would help reduce traffic congestion in Karachi and improve the overall urban transport system.
Urban planning experts believe the combination of dedicated freight infrastructure and electric public transport can create long-term economic and environmental benefits for Sindh. Reduced congestion may improve productivity, lower transportation costs, and enhance the commuting experience for millions of residents.
The approved projects also signal the Sindh government’s increasing focus on sustainable urban development and smart transportation solutions that align with international standards.
With Karachi continuing to face growing traffic challenges and population pressures, these new transport initiatives could play a vital role in reshaping the future of mobility in Sindh’s largest cities.
