By The government of Punjab is expected to extend its free public transport initiative for another month, offering continued relief to citizens struggling with rising fuel costs. The move comes as petrol and diesel prices hover near Rs. 400 per liter, putting significant financial pressure on households across the province.
According to official sources, the Transport Department has already finalized its recommendations to continue free travel across major mass transit systems. A final decision is expected after a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, with a formal announcement likely soon after.
Relief Through Mass Transit Systems
The free travel facility currently applies to key public transport networks, including the Orange Line Train, Metro Bus, Speedo Bus, and Electric Bus services. These systems form the backbone of urban mobility in Punjab and are widely used by students, office workers, laborers, women, and elderly passengers.
The initiative was originally introduced following a sharp increase in petroleum prices, which significantly raised commuting costs. Instead of directly subsidizing fuel, the government opted to absorb transportation costs on mass transit routes—providing immediate and targeted relief to daily commuters.
Massive Daily Impact
The scale of this relief effort is substantial. Official figures suggest that around 290,000 passengers use the Orange Line Train daily, while more than 100,000 rely on the Metro Bus. In total, nearly 800,000 citizens benefit from free public transport across Punjab every day.
This means that any extension of the program will continue to support hundreds of thousands of families who are already dealing with rising expenses for food, fuel, and utilities.
Changing Mobility Patterns
The ongoing fuel price surge has significantly altered transportation habits in Punjab. As petrol and diesel become more expensive, private vehicle usage declines, ride-hailing fares increase, and reliance on public transport grows. In this context, free mass transit is not just a convenience—it has become a critical support system for many households.
Beyond financial relief, the initiative also helps reduce road congestion and fuel consumption, contributing to a more sustainable urban environment.
