By The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has formally initiated plans for the Islamabad electric tram project, marking a significant step toward modernizing public transport in the federal capital. The move comes following directives from the federal interior minister, with authorities instructed to complete a comprehensive feasibility study within three months. The project is expected to be presented for approval in the upcoming federal budget after the study’s completion.
Proposed Tram Routes
According to preliminary proposals, the first tram line will connect Islamabad International Airport to Lake View Park. This route aims to link a major international gateway with one of the city’s most popular recreational destinations, while passing through key urban corridors.
The second proposed route will extend from Rawat to Lake View Park, integrating suburban communities with Islamabad’s central zones. This corridor is expected to ease daily commuting challenges and reduce reliance on private vehicles.
Officials anticipate finalizing the feasibility report before June. In preparation, CDA has begun hiring a consultant to conduct detailed technical, financial, and operational assessments.
Modern, Cashless Transport System
The Islamabad electric tram project is envisioned as a fully modern and cashless transport network. Digital ticketing systems will enable seamless fare payments, improving transparency and passenger convenience. Plans also include the construction of tram depots and dedicated charging stations to support an environmentally sustainable fleet.
By adopting electric-powered trams, authorities aim to significantly reduce traffic congestion and lower carbon emissions in the capital. Islamabad has witnessed steady traffic growth in recent years, and sustainable mass transit is increasingly viewed as essential for long-term urban planning.
Tourism and Regional Connectivity
Beyond daily commuting, the project also includes integration with a proposed glass train route toward Murree. This linkage is expected to strengthen tourism connectivity, offering visitors a scenic and efficient travel experience between Islamabad and the popular hill station.
If approved in the federal budget, the project will move into the tendering and construction phases.
