Widespread intermittent rain accompanied by heavy snowfall has gripped the upper regions of Pakistan, significantly disrupting daily life and travel. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), severe weather conditions are expected to continue in most northern and upper parts of the country over the next 24 hours, prompting precautionary advisories for tourists, commuters, and local authorities.
Road Closures and Slippery Conditions
Heavy precipitation is likely to result in road blockages, reduced visibility, and extremely slippery driving conditions across several popular tourist destinations and mountainous districts. Affected areas include Naran, Kaghan, Dir, Swat, Kalam, Chitral, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Shangla, Astore, Hunza, Skardu, Murree, Galiyat, Neelum Valley, Bagh, Poonch, Haveli, and Rawalakot.
Authorities warn that sudden snowfall and continuous rain may lead to temporary closures of key routes, particularly in high-altitude areas, causing delays and safety risks for travelers.
Landslide and Avalanche Threat
The PMD has highlighted a high risk of landslides and avalanches in hilly areas of upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir. Continuous snow accumulation and saturated soil conditions significantly increase the likelihood of such incidents. Tourists have been strongly advised to avoid unnecessary travel and to strictly follow local administration instructions during this period.
Weather Outlook for Other Regions
Rain, wind, and thunderstorms with snowfall over the hills are expected to continue in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Islamabad, and upper Punjab. Moderate to heavy snowfall is specifically forecast for Murree and the Galiyat region. Meanwhile, residents in plain areas, including Lahore and other parts of Punjab, should prepare for wet conditions, chilly winds, and a sharp drop in temperatures.
Travelers and residents are urged to remain cautious, monitor weather updates, and prioritize safety until conditions improve.
