n a significant move to revive rail-based public transport in the province, the Balochistan Government has announced the launch of a People’s Train Service between Quetta and Kuchlak, with an allocation of Rs. 1.4 billion set to be released in the coming days. The initiative aims to improve daily commuting, strengthen regional connectivity, and restore confidence in railway transport across Balochistan.
The announcement was made by Sarfraz Bugti during a meeting with Hanif Abbasi at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat in Quetta. The high-level discussion focused on reviving stalled and underutilized railway projects through a joint initiative between the provincial government and Pakistan Railways.
A First-of-Its-Kind Provincial Initiative
According to officials present at the meeting, both sides reached an agreement in principle to launch joint railway development projects, with the People’s Train Service as the flagship initiative. Federal Minister Hanif Abbasi welcomed the decision, describing it as historic, noting that it is the first time a provincial government has taken the lead in launching a local railway service under Pakistan’s devolution framework.
Abbasi emphasized that while other provinces had previously expressed interest in localized rail services, Balochistan has become the first to translate interest into action, setting a precedent for future provincial–federal collaboration.
Joint Development and Infrastructure Upgrades
Under the agreed framework, the Quetta–Kuchlak People’s Train Service will operate as a joint venture between Pakistan Railways and the Balochistan government. Chief Minister Bugti confirmed that the provincial government will fund the construction of new railway stations, along with the upgradation of existing rail infrastructure, to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations.
The project is expected to ease daily travel for students, workers, and low-income commuters who rely on affordable public transport between Quetta and its surrounding areas. Improved rail connectivity is also likely to reduce road congestion and transportation costs.
Expansion Plans Across the Province
Looking ahead, Chief Minister Bugti revealed that if the Quetta–Kuchlak service proves successful, the provincial government plans to extend the People’s Train Service to other districts, including Mastung and Pishin. Such expansions could play a crucial role in reconnecting remote regions with major urban centers and boosting local economic activity.
A Step Toward Inclusive and Affordable Mobility
The People’s Train Service reflects a broader vision to enhance public welfare, regional integration, and sustainable transport in Balochistan. By investing in rail infrastructure and partnering closely with Pakistan Railways, the provincial government aims to deliver long-term social and economic benefits while setting an example for intergovernmental cooperation in Pakistan.
