Lahore Bikers Must Install Safety Rods Before Basant Festival

The Lahore Commissioner, Maryam Khan, has issued a strict directive for motorcyclists ahead of the upcoming Basant festival. No motorcycle will be allowed on the city’s roads during the three-day celebration unless it is equipped with a protective safety rod or antenna.

Mandatory Safety Rods for Motorcycles

This regulation is part of the “Mehfooz Basant” initiative, aimed at reviving the cultural festival while preventing fatal accidents caused by sharp kite strings, which led to the festival’s 20-year ban.

Under the Kite Flying Ordinance 2025, all two-wheelers must install safety rods. These rods are designed to deflect stray kite strings, protecting riders’ necks and faces from life-threatening injuries.

To help citizens comply, the government will establish 100 road safety camps across Lahore. These camps aim to install around one million safety rods, fitting 50,000–60,000 motorcycles daily.

Restricted Zones and Helmet Rules

The Lahore Police submitted a 27-point security plan to the Lahore High Court to ensure a safe Basant celebration. The city is divided into Red, Yellow, and Green zones to monitor kite-flying activities effectively. Motorcyclists are strictly prohibited from entering Red Zones without a safety antenna.

Additionally, both riders and pillion passengers must wear helmets at all times. Authorities warned that violators will face strict legal action, including fines and possible vehicle impoundment.

The government is acting quickly to ensure a safe festival. Motorcyclists are encouraged to visit designated road safety camps before February 6–8, 2026, to install safety rods and avoid restrictions or penalties. Complying with these regulations will allow riders to enjoy Basant festivities safely.
