Karachi Launches Double-Decker Bus Service with Subsidized Fares

The Sindh government has officially launched the Karachi double-decker bus service, marking a major advancement in the city’s public transportation network. The service was inaugurated on Wednesday by Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon and Local Government Minister Nasir Hussain Shah, as part of ongoing efforts to modernize urban mobility in Pakistan’s largest city.

During the inauguration ceremony, officials briefed the senior minister on the technical features and operational design of the newly introduced buses. Speaking on the occasion, Sharjeel Inam Memon stated that the government had fulfilled its commitment to introduce double-decker buses in Karachi, emphasizing that the project aims to provide maximum benefit to the public through affordable, safe, and efficient transport options.

According to officials, the double-decker bus route spans 22 kilometers, initially operating between Malir and Shahrah-e-Faisal, two key commercial and residential corridors of the city. The fare structure has been set between Rs. 80 and Rs. 120, ensuring affordability for daily commuters, students, and office workers.

The minister highlighted that the Sindh government is offering subsidies on bus fares to reduce transportation costs for the public. He added that public transport facilities in Karachi are being expanded continuously, with plans to extend the double-decker bus service to additional roads and areas in the near future.

Sharing key ridership figures, Sharjeel Inam Memon revealed that more than 125,000 passengers travel daily on the Peoples Bus Service, while around 65,000 commuters use the Green Line bus service each day. He also confirmed that construction work on the Red Line BRT project has resumed, further strengthening Karachi’s mass transit infrastructure.

In addition, the minister said multiple government departments are working in coordination to improve Karachi’s road network. He disclosed that Rs. 9 billion has been allocated for the development of industrial areas, and noted that the Shahrah-e-Bhutto project has been completed as a modern, state-of-the-art facility for public use.

The launch of the Karachi double-decker bus service reflects the Sindh government’s broader vision to reduce traffic congestion, promote public transport usage, and improve the overall commuting experience for millions of Karachi residents.
